In addition to the Sintra Mountains and Sintra-Cascais Nature Park, the surroundings of the town of Sintra are dotted by royal retreats, estates, castles and buildings from the 8th-9th century, in addition to many buildings completed between the 15th and 19th century, including the Castelo dos Mouros, the Pena National Palace and the Sintra National Palace, resulting in its classification by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1995.
On the coast line you can visit:
Ericeira - village
Azenhas do Mar - village
Praia das Maças - beach
Praia Pequena - surf
Praia Grande - surf
Praia da Adraga - beach
Cabo da Roca - the western-most point of continental Europe
Sintra, 15km away, is unique and deserves its status as a world heritage site. First the Moors, then the Portuguese kings who expelled them, built their castles and palaces there. Later ages brought rich foreigners who created villas and palaces with lush gardens and romantic architecture - outdone by king Don Fernando, whose bizarre palace anticipated mad King Ludwig's Rhine castles by several years.
The location is ideal for exploring not just Sintra but central Portugal. Lisbon is 40 minutes by car, and Cascais and Estoril are 30 minutes away. Famous Ericeira beach is close by. Further afield: in easy day trips from Sintra, you can visit the walled city of Obidos, the Knights' templar castle of Tomar, and Batalha Abbey, the monastery palace of Mafra, the seaside town of Sesimbra, Ericeira, Palmela castle and Arrabida national park.
