Sintra, just half-an hour away from Lisbon, was chosen as a royal getaway place since medieval times.

The several palaces and botanical gardens make this region famous, being classified as a World Heritage Site since 1995. Sintra's mountain range features a microclimate that provides the ideal conditions for growing exotic trees like giant ferns from New Zealand, Araucarias from Australia, Camelias from Japan and Sequoia from North America together with the indigenous vegetation of Cork Oaks, Olive and Strawberry trees.

Many hiking trails will allow you to discover the hidden secrets of this hills: old manor houses, the Monserrate palace boasting the neo muslim and indian architecture the fairy tale palace of Pena, a summer residence with the first chalet built in Portugal and a franciscan monastery carved out from a rock.

The city centre with its windy streets, pastry shops and the magnificient National Palace with its extravagant decoration and tile panels will keep you busy for the first days.

The Açucena Villa is located near the Modern Art Museum and Concert Hall, featuring ballet and music performances.

Off the main street you have a farmers market, grocery shops and banks.
