The Algarve region

The Algarve is known for its beautiful clean sandy beaches. The coast is a mixture of wild expanses and bustling resorts. There are more than 20 Golf Courses to choose from. The South western tip of Europe is within easy reach with its stunning vista of high cliffs. Portugal has around 300 days of sun per year and temperatures are always at least 10 degs C above those of the UK. Being surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean the sea breeze keeps temperatures from being too hot in the summer and the humidity is low.

The Portuguese are a friendly race, very helpful, they love children, and most people speak English. The food is varied and good value. A wide variety of fish is available, and vegetables range from English to Mediterranean. The meat is good quality and usually farmed further north, they are especially fond of 'Black Pork', steak, and chicken. There are lots of historical villages and Castles to visit. You can hire quadbikes, horses and buggies, and there are water parks for those adventurous enough to tackle the exciting rides. The Algarve is on the migration route to Africa for northern European birds, and Storks, Ibises and Flamingos can be seen on the estuaries all year round. Their folk music is Fado and it can be heard wafting out of the bars and restaurants as you wander past. The highest mountain in the Algarve is the Monchique and from Foia at the top, the whole of the coast south and west can be viewed. Markets are held in most villages, everyday in the Mercado covered markets, and in the open air once a month.

Torre is situated in the rolling countryside above the coast, with stunning views from the ridge and sweeping down the valley westward to Portimao. The Gralheria hill can be seen from most of the coast. Large reservoir lakes and unspoilt countryside are close by for picnics and walking.

Our local villages are well supplied with restaurants serving excellent home prepared meals, which are good value. Lunch with a choice of five main courses, including vegetables, pudding and coffee, can be had for 8 euros, house wine included! Silves has one of the most famous fish restaurants of the Algarve, amongst the many on offer, and a superb Moorish castle. There are lots of beaches to choose from and from Portimao boat trips can be taken to access the caves and small bays not accessible by road.

Supermarkets shops and banks are situated in Messines and Silves. In Amorosa there is a local artisan baker and small supermarket. There are buses throughout the Algarve.
