There are two trips the kids realy love. The boat tours, from the Albufeira marina, to view the dolphins, caves & unique rock formations and the catamaran day trips, from the Villamoura marina, that includes a sardine BBQ on the beach & a dip in the ocean.
Falesia beach , near Albufeira, has been awarded the golden flag & has a variety of water sports on the beach. Villamoura also has a lovely beach with water sports & has a marina with a variety of shops and restaurants.
Ria Formosa, a natural park with lots of opportunity to do bird watching. Take a boat from Olhlia to the islands & spend the day on the beach. Olhlia has a large fish market & vegetable market well worth a visit. The church built of bones can be seen in this town.
There are a variety of food festivals (sardine, seafood, Portuguese food etc) during most months in the Algarve.
Family fun at the water parks (Slide & Splash at Lagoa), a visit to the zoo (Zoo Lagos) with 'monkey islands' are brilliant or Zoomarine oceanarium (Guia) with an opportunity to swim with the dolphins are close by.
Wine tours (various tour options) in Guia, near Albufeira, at Adega do Cantor translates to Winery of the Singer, Sir Cliff Richard.
A range of shops, eateries, bowling alley, 9 screen cinema & Nike outlet at the Algarve shopping centre (Guia), 15 minutes away. Pottery outlets in Porches & Monchique.
Albufeira old town with it's pretty cobbled streets, is a lively town & has loads of restaurants, shops & night life in São João ("the strip") to enjoy. The beautiful beach, Oura, is just a short distance from the bottom end of the strip.
Lagos lies on the river & the beaches are a few minutes away from the town. It has historical interests, cobbled streets, lively bars that can be found on the Rua 25 de Abril (main street).
The Silves area
Kayaking near Lagos is a great way to explore the caves along the coast.
The Moorish town, Silves, is on the river & has a castle, cistern well in the archaeological museum, magnificent cathedral & the Cruz de Portugal (Cross of Portugal). Lots of shops & lovely restaurants to enjoy. Rui's restaurant is very good for seafood, the English Cafe near the castle has great views or try one of the riverside restaurants.
Silves is the perfect setting for the annual Medieval Festival in August with it s narrow, cobbled streets leading up to the castle to a medieval market place. Trestle tables & hay bales are laid out next to the barbecues & spit roasts in the "dining" area & strolling musicians & jugglers entertain.
The two week Silves Beer Festival in July is held in the Fabrique do Ingles. There are many restaurants & live entertainment throughout the summer months including state of the art laser shows.
Alte is a typical Portuguese village & extremely attractive. Picnic tables, BBQ facilities, cafe & restaurant can be found at at Fonte Grande where you can to enjoy a swim in the lovely cool waters. The large handicraft shop where you are sure to find something Portuguese is well stocked with linen, pottery, lavender oil etc. Walk (or drive) out of the village & along the river for about 2km to the Queda Vigario, the largest waterfall in the Algarve.
Caldas de Monchique was a fashionable spa in the early 20s. Famous for it warm springs. Have lunch in the quiet square under tall shady trees. The region is well known for its medronho (brandy made from the fruit of the strawberry tree) & the scissor chair (wooden chair). There is a pleasant walk in the forest along a stream. En route to Caldas de Monchique visit the Foia peak (902m) the highest mountain in the Serra de Monchique & enjoy views of the entire Algarve coast on a clear day.
Enjoy bird watching or star gazing from the River House's sunset pool deck over looking the river.
The level of the water surrounding the property is dependent on the amount of rainfall in the rainy season. The level of water starts dropping from May & the river can reduce to a mere stream in August otherwise it is a lovely spot for course fishing at the bottom of the garden; close & safe for kids. I can recommend a fishing shop where you can get your fishing gear from.
Spring has a wonderful show of wild flowers. The cistus with its grey-green leaves produces masses of white flowers that shimmer in the sunlight.
