Enquire nowThe Cumbria/Lake District region
Silverdale is a beautifull part of South Lakeland set within an AONB. The AONB, first designated in 1972, spans the county boundary between Lancashire and Cumbria and covers an area of approximately 75sq kms. The main features of the AONB are the small scale limestone hills, deciduous woodlands and agricultural land which occurs in the valleys.
Within a small area there is an intimate variation of scenery, including bare limestone pavements, salt marsh, foreshore fen, parkland, woodland and agricultural land. The area is particularly notable for the limestone pavement, which forms an unique and irreplaceable landscape, now protected by Limestone Pavement Orders.
The Lake District is an area of mountains and lakes in the north west of England. It is the largest national park in the United Kingdom, covering 2,280 sq kms. It has long been valued for its natural beauty and appreciated as a superlative example of man's harmonious interaction with his natural environment. It has exerted a profound influence over the artistic appreciation of the beauties of nature, inspiring Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and many of Britain's finest landscape painters.
The Silverdale area
Old Waterslack Farm was built in 1721 in a delightful woodland setting on the outskirts of Silverdale. Located perfectly bewteen Eaves Wood, an ancient woodland area and Gait Barrow Nature Reserve, wildlife and walking go hand in hand in this beautiful part of the world.
With it’s quaint village shops, Silverdale is just 9 miles from Lancaster which is rich in Maritime history, and only 10 miles from Kendal, the gateway to the majestic Lake District.
The R.S.P.B. Leighton Moss bird reserve is within walking distance whilst the Yorkshire Dales is within easy driving distance.
Arnside, a small seaside resort a 5 minute drive away or can be reached on foot from Eaves Wood, is well known for Arnside Knott, a beautiful climb that has fantastic views over to Grange and Cartmel, as well as it's small street of shops and "the boar" which when seen during a high, fast tide can be fast and furious!
Warton, also a part of the AONB, is also a short drive or longer walk away and is known for Warton Crag Nature reserve- if climbed The Crag provides views over the bay, to the lakeland hills and even North Yorkshire.
Carnforth is a lovely example of an original Iron Works town, but it is biggest claim to fame is possibly the most romantic film of all time "Breif Encounter" being filmed at Carnforth Train Station.
Old Waterslack Farm is an excellent base from which to explore:
The topiary gardens at Levens Hall;
Sizergh Castle “the jewel of the National Trust”;
Falconry displays and stately home splendour at Leighton Hall;
Steamtown Railway Museum in Carnforth
Lancaster Castle
Lancaster Museum
Lancaster Maratime Museum
And many more attractions.
