The Costa Tropical/Granada region
The historic city of Granada (with its vibrant Moroccan quarter and the attractions of the Alhambra Palace and the Generalife) are a 15 minute drive. The fascinating troglodyte region around Guadix is close at hand and the beaches of the Costa Tropical can be reached within 45 minutes. The Alpujarras (the highest Villages in Spain - made famous by Chris Stewart's book - "Driving Over Lemons") are also within easy reach).
Sierra Nevada National Park / Guejar Sierra area
The pretty little town of Guejar Sierra has long been popular, both as a summer and winter destination, among Spanish visitors - and can offer plenty of restaurants and nice bodegas, both in the town itself and close by in the surrounding area.
It is situated in the heart of the Sierra Nevada national park - an area of outstanding natural beauty. The town itself is typically Spanish and very pretty with its cobbled streets and neat white houses with flower draped balconies. It clings to the mountainside overlooking the mighty peaks of Europe's most southerly ski resort. Only 25 minutes from the ski lifts - it offers the opportunity to combine both the varied skiing of the Sierra Nevada (with views of Africa from the upper slopes) and the experience of staying in a traditional Spanish village. For those not interested in the skiing, Guejar Sierra is even closer (15 mins) to the beautiful historic city of Granada - home to the astounding Alhambra Palace. The legacy of the Moorish kings of Granada is everywhere - in the courtyards, fountains, gardens and buildings.
Guejar Sierra has a number of local shops, a pharmacy, a bank, and various excellent restaurants to choose from - many with lovely terraces from which to enjoy the views while dining, and many with pools for the use of summer visitors. The local campsite also has an excellent restaurant with views, a pool, a play area, archery and other activities for children. The old funicular station at Maitena has been converted into a restaurant with dining and swimming on the banks of the River Genil in summer. There is canoe hire on the shores of the Canales Reservoir and horse-riding in the hills. The eccentric little bodega in the heart of the town is a great find and the welcoming moustachioed owner is a famous local character. There is also a water park near Granada and another at Almunecar. This is a great area for walking, mountain-biking, climbing and adventure sports as well as for family holidays and the cultural attractions of Granada. With the coast also within easy reach, there is something for everyone.
The people in Guejar are friendly and welcoming and, in typical Andalucian manner, the calendar is studded with local fiestas which keep alive traditions such as the Romeria in August, when the Gitanos, in their tight black suits, gallop their fine horses through the streets, each with a pretty girl on his pommel.
Although so close to Granada, Guejar Sierra is still very much a well-kept Spanish secret - barely discovered yet by tourists from other countries.
