The Tuscany region
Region of north central Italy, on the west coast, comprising the provinces of Massa e Carrara, Arezzo, Florence, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato, and Siena; area 22,997 sq km/8,879 sq mi; population (2001 est) 3,460,800. Its capital is Florence, and cities include Pisa, Livorno, and Siena. The area is mainly agricultural, producing cereals, wine (Chianti hills), olives (Lucca) and tobacco (plain of Arno); lignite (upper Arno) and iron (Elba) are also mined, and marble quarried (Carrara, Apuan Alps). During the 14th and 15th centuries, Italy's classical literary language became based on the Tuscan dialect, after it was used by Dante Alighieri, Petrarch, and Bocaccio.
History Tuscany was inhabited by Etruscans from around 1000 BC, ancient Etruria corresponding quite closely geographically to modern Tuscany. The region was conquered by Rome in the mid-4th century BC. It became a Lombard duchy during the 6th–8th centuries, with Lucca as its capital, and then was under Frankish rule during the 8th–12th centuries. In medieval times the area was divided into small states, with many cities becoming free communes and some – such as Pisa, Florence, Lucca, and Siena – becoming powerful republics. Cortona - Medieval town where the book "Under the Tuscan Sun" was written Chiusi - one of the best Eruscan museums in Italy Nearby Umbrian sites - Lago Trasimeno, Perugia, Assisi.
Siena / Crete Senesi area
Siena - height 322m, population 65,634 Dante's 'Antechamer to Paradise' is built on 3 hills in warm, rosy coloured brick and is one of the finest and best preserved medieval cities int he world. Her positon, not just important stragecially, is marvellously sited - surrounded by rich agricultural land, which comes up to the city walls, and the rolling hills of Central and Southern Tuscany with views to South to Monte Amiata. Much is unchaged since the 13C, from the magnificent buildings to the people and their way of life. Well knowned for the "Palio" bareback horserace that is held on the 2nd July and 16th August of every year. The Campo - one of the world's most beautiful square.
Pienza - Jewel of Rensaissance, the city is a little more than an overgrown village, with a fine church, Papal palace etc. Built in 1405 its model architectural features are used on the set of Zefferelli' s film "Romeo and Juliet and The English Patient (1997). UNESCO site Also known for its the tasty Pecorino (sheep's milk) cheese that is produced in the surrounding area
Motalcino - where the famous Brunello wine is produced.
Monte Oliveto Maggiore - built in the heart of the "Crete Senesi" an area of deep eroeded ravines and ridges - "Crete" - craters or moors. The abbey's Gret Cloister (1426-1474) has 36 frescoes depicting life of St. Benedict, nine of which are Luca Signorelli and rest by Il Sodoma.
How to get there
Fly to Florence or Pisa. Cheap flights available Ryanair. com to Pisa, varies car hire companies at the airport e.g. Hertz, Avis, Maggiore. Also car hire companies in Siena - Hertz & Avis. Cheap Ryanair flights into Perugia which is only 70 kms from the apartment.
From Siena follow for Arezzo - Perugia taking the link road SS 326 Siena-Bettolle. Turn right at first exit Taverne D’Arbia Drive through modern residential village At petrol station turn right following road around At roundabout turn right over the bridge signs Asciano Pass railway crossing and village of Arbia, continue along scenic winding road passing Leonina on the left Turn right (sign S.Martino in Grania) onto strada bianca, with red letter boxes and green rubbish bin at corner on right hand side. Pass cemetary and farmhouses (Podere Grania) on the left hand side – do not turn here Turn left (sign Cavoni on telegraph, pole right hand side) Drive towards farmhouse (Podere Cavoni) at wooden fence and fork turn left and follow the road right around to the other side of the building. At the end of road there is the apartment’s parking space. The apartment, is the one with an external staircase and arched windows.
