The Tuscany region
Tuscany is an ideal holiday destination, world renowned as the most beautiful region of Italy, with a civilisation dating back to the Etruscans, and famous as the source of the Italian Renaissance. Today it is celebrated for its unspoilt landscapes and coast line, and for its superb wines and refined culinary tradition. It is studded with an infinite number of important historical sites, and architectural gems especially concentrated in its major cities, above all Florence and Siena with their inestimable patrimony of artistic treasures. The Crete Senesi and Val d'Orcia National Park area of South Siena is perhaps the most spectacular and breathtaking example of the essence of Tuscany.
Siena / Crete Senesi area
*Siena:the real centre of Siena is the renowned Piazza del Campo, which hosts its famous Palio in July and August, where the competing Contrade ,17 in number, run a fiercely challenged horse race round the perimetre of this extraordinary shell shaped Square, which is overlooked by the height of the Torre del Mangia. This and the Duomo of Siena, both with their magnificent museums, form the heart of the unique complex of architecture and artistic heritage belonging to this enchanting city. *San Giovanni D'Asso: San Giovanni is ‘our’ village. It’s very small and quiet, but it has a bank, supermarket, general store, bakery, bar with newsagent and tobacconist, post office, doctor surgery and chemist, butcher, wine tasting and local delicacies shops ..... Specialities are the local White Truffles, Pecorino sheep cheeses and Orcia Wine. The Festival of the White Truffle is held in November. The Castle, an imposing medieval structure beautifully restored, and built in part by the same Piccolomini Pope as Pienza, includes the Town Hall and Conference rooms, and a Museum dedicated to the White Truffle. On the Castle square, an inviting "hotel de charme" with an excellent restaurant has been recently opened, offering tasteful and refined dinners. A walk around San Giovanni d’Asso will also bring you to the small but intriguing early Romanesque Chapel of San Pietro in Villore. Another interesting local feature consists in the ‘Bosco della Ragnaia’: this is a wood which has been landscaped by a local american artist . You can see the extension of this project at the end of the valley, coming out from La Selva onto the road for Asciano, the gate is just there on the left. *Montisi is the sister village of San Giovanni d'Asso, 6 km away, and is another integral small medieval settlement, with its own festival in august, La Giostra di Simone, with a jousting on horseback and pageantry in period costume. In June and July it hosts its own Art Festival, Montisi Art. *Pienza: Famous village with unique Early Renaissance square and Duomo, to the design of the Piccolomini Pope. Many shops with local produce; ceramics, linens etc. Nice restaurants for lunch, and walkway along the walls with majectic views of Monte Amiata.... *Abbadia Di Monte Oliveto Maggiore: A working Benedictine Abbey, with beautiful frescoed cloisters(Signorelli and Sodoma). Gregorian vespers are sung at just after 6.00pm, and at 11 am mass on Sundays. *Montalcino: Famous for Brunello wine (find all the varieties at Enoteca La Fortezza, among others).Explore this medieval town with Fortress, and admire the enormous views. *Montepulciano: Also famous for its wine. Rosso di Montepulciano is its younger wine; and Vino Nobile is a ‘riserva’. The elegant Caffè Poliziano and its refined restaurant. Of note are the imposing ‘Cantine del Redi’. *Bagno Vignoni: Magic square with well known roman hot springs. Small bars, restaurants, an excellent ‘erboristeria’( great teas and spices).Intriguing boutiques. *Sant'anna in Camprena: An ancient convent between Pienza and Castelmuzio. Try and get to see the Sodoma frescoes (in the refectory). Set for ‘The English Patient’. *San Quirico D'Orcia: Old town of Etruscan origin on the Via Cassia between Siena and Rome. See the tryptic of Sano di Pietro in the Collegiata church. Visit The ‘Horti Leonini’, Renaissance Italian gardens, and the Piccolomini Palace. *Sant'antimo: Picturesque Romanesque Abbey below Montalcino past Fattoria Barbi. Gregorian vespers at 7 pm on Saturdays. Check times, as they may vary this year. *Buonconvento: Small walled town originally part of the Via Francigena pilgrim route with its ‘Museo dell’Arte Sacra’ and ‘Museo Etnografico del mondo contadino’. Visit ‘Artelier’ gift shop. Excellent erboristeria ‘Il Soffione’. See listings for restaurants. *Murlo: Old Etruscan village with world-famous Etruscan Museum.
