Siena area
Siena is an elegant city situated in the heart of Tuscany, in a particularly beautiful position that starts from the north with the incomparable wealth of the Chianti countryside considered one of the most important place to visit in Tuscany.
Initially Siena was an Etruscan settlement, then came under Roman rule but its fortunes rose under Lombard rule when it was the only city on the Via Francigena between Lucca and Viterbo and when it grew a lot economically.
At the present time, Siena is one of the most liveable cities in Italy and an important cultural centre visited every year by a lot of tourists who love the famous Piazza del Campo theatre of the Palio, surrounded by 16 palaces and dominated by the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia, the suggestive tower symbol of the municipal authority.
