About this location
The Tuscany region
The Siena region is one of the Chianti regions of central Tuscany. It stretches from the perfect walled town of Monteriggione and Castellina in Chianti in the north down to Montalcino, of Brunello fame, and Pienza in the south. One of the favourite areas is Le Crete, an area of rolling hills, punctuated by the cipress trees and roads winding over the horizon. There are just so many historical towns to visit, all beautifully preserved in their Renaissance glory. The province of Siena fulfills everyone's idea of the classic Italy
Walking into the walled city of Siena through one of the great gates is like stepping back in time. Most cars are banned, so the people come out to walk about their town, making this a busy, thriving city. At the heart if the Campo, the main shell-shaped piazza, dominated by the ancient Palazzo Communale, where the Palio, the wild bareback horse race is run twice a year. This is not a spectacle for the tourists, but the flowering of a virulent rivalry between the various 'Contrade' of the town, dating back centuries.
There is so to see here, from the Duomo and the Baptistery, to the Torre di Mangia and the Palazzo Communale, with works by Simone Martini, Lorenzetti and other artists of the high renaissance.
