The Tuscany region

Tuscany is a splendid region of italy where you can find any type of relax.
Here you can enter in contact with nature and art .

Siena / Monteriggioni area

Siena: The city of Palio

Siena is 322 mt. above the sea level. The origin of the city is still uncertain. Many historical evidences tell about an ancient Etruscan settlement called Sena, settled at the border between the territory of Volterra, Arezzo and Chiusi, that was conquered by the Romans in Augustus times and took the name of Sena Iulia.

Since the X century the city of Siena had a heavy demographic, economic and politic development, due to its position along the road "Romea" or "Francigena".
Siena, from the architectonical and artistic point of view, reached its maximum brightness in the decennials around the XIV century and during this period were built the most of the monuments, the constructions of the Campo, the Palazzo Pubblico (that before was called Palazzo dei Signori), the Cathedral, the tower Mangia. During these years the "Maestà" of Duccio was painted.

Siena is famous for its 17 "contrade" and for the Palio, that takes place the 2nd of July and the 16th of August of each year.

The Santa Maria della Scala was an hospital for the pilgrims and nowadays is become an important museum.
Florence: The capital of Renaissance

"Florentia", the florid, was the name given from the Romans to the little settlement built in the I century a.C. at the foot of the ancient Etruscan Fiesole.
Florentia became soon a real city with its own forum (nowadays Piazza della Repubblica), the thermal bath (via delle Terme), the amphitheatre (via Torta).

Since the 200 the city started its flourishing in the arts, in the culture and the international business, and reached the height during the 400 under the rule of Cosimo and Lorenzo de' Medici.

The Granducato survived, with alternate phases, until the politic unification of Italy. Florence was the capital from the 1865 to 1871.
Its beauties are famous all over the world, like piazza della Signoria with Palazzo Vecchio, Santa Maria Novella, Santa Croce, Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti and the artistic wonders kept in the many museum of the city, first of all the Galleria degli Uffizi.
San Gimignano: "The city of the beautiful towers"

The city is completely surrounded by medieval walls and is still placed on the ancient plant with the tracing of the Francigene and with the old Florentina road.
On the top of the hill, where San Gimignano was built, there are the two main squares: piazza della Cisterna is a triangle bordered with buildings and piazza del Duomo with the City Hall.

San Gimignano has been declared from the UNESCO as humanity worldwide patrimony and is famous all over the world for its towers, from which it takes the nickname "city of the beautiful towers", for the wonderful surrounding landscape and for its products: the wine "Vernaccia" DOCG and the saffron.
Colle di Val d'Elsa The city of Crystal

The oldest part of Colle Val d'Elsa is situated on a hill top and the narrow little valleys around of it divide the urban plane in 3 parts: Piano, Borgo and Castello, nowadays are simply called Colle Bassa (the lower part) and Colle Alta (the higher part).

Here was born at the end of 500 the glass industry, that was the anticipation of the production of Crystal, for which Colle is famous all over the world.

Colle Val d'Elsa is also the city of the famous architect Arnolfo di Cambio, who planned the Palazzo Vecchio of Florence. The house where he was born is a wonderful tower situated in the main street of Castello and nowadays is possible to visit it.

The city offers a lot of suggestiveness to the visitors: from the works of art collected in the Civic and Sacred Art Museum, situated at the Palazzo dei Priori, that is a work of art by itself, to the suggestions of the history kept in the beautiful collection of the Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli Museum.

In the Crystal Museum you could see products and machineries used for the production of this precious material.
Monteriggioni

Monteriggioni is the Sienese door of the Val d'Elsa, the Republic wanted this city as protection of the Francigena.
When you enter the door Romea or Franca it's like going back in old times.

It is like to be in the real Middle Ages, that you can see along via Maggio, in the widening of piazza Roma, during the visit to the Virtual Museum and to the Parrocchiale dell'Assunta, with its austere linearity.

To find the origins, you can go toward Abbadia Isola, the powerful abbey and the walled town.
Casole d’Elsa: "Little Tuscan village"

Casole d'Elsa is a little village upon a hill, situated in the south-west part of the Val d'Elsa.
It is amazing to see the contrast between the installation of the present-day art and the Sienese "cassero", where you still can see the black and white "balzana" of the Republic, a 13th century small fort that nowadays is become the Town Hall.
The keen on art cannot forget the Collegiata. You will find a part of a painting that represents the Last Judgment of a painter of the Duccio’s school and you could see above all the cenotaph of Messer Porrina, 13th century masterpiece of Marco Romano. In the Collegiata there is also a remarkable work of Della Robbia. In the museum you could see also important finds.

Do not forget the Live Art Museum and the Gallery of '900.
