The Tuscany region
Tuscany is known for its landscapes, traditions, history, artistic legacy and its permanent influence on high culture.
The climate is fairly mild in the coastal areas, and is harsher and rainy in the interior, with considerable fluctuations in temperature between winter and summer, giving the region a soil-building active freeze-thaw cycle in part accounting for the region's once having served as a key breadbasket of ancient Rome.
The Palio of Siena, known throughout the world, not as many people think it is a historical, but a folk festival. The Palio is run interrupted by 100 years 2 times a year and attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world for its uniqueness and its spectacular. It is stated as a feast only at the beginning of Siena 600 as a demonstration organized by Contradas who attended, after around 1656 was organized directly by the Municipality. It was originally organized only the Palio di Provenzano (July 2), and the winning Contrada could hold the Palio of August 16 (Assumption) at its discretion. It happened then that was only during the Palio of July. Only since 1802 the Palio of the Assumption was also organized by the Municipality. The Palio is the current Contradas towns: Siena is divided into 17 contrade, which correspond to areas of the city. Of these, only 10 may participate in the race, of which 7 are involved in law, while the other 3 are extracted in the days before the event.
