The Tuscany region

Maybe, the most famous region of Italy, Tuscany will make you fall in love with its rolling hills, its stunning landscapes, its medieval cities, its festivals and its cooking and wine.

Siena / Murlo area

There are few italian cities which, like Siena, are so complete from the artistic point of view to make them archetypes of a particular style and period. Siena still preserves intact its medieval aspect: built on three hills, full of steep, winding-alley ways, enclosed within the circle of its massive walls which seem to safeguard its culture and the treasure of its art and history.
Twice a year, on July 2 and on August 16 the Palio takes place. It is certainly one of the most popular of italian festivals, attracting many thousand of people from every part of the world.

In the kitchen you will find a "welcome basket" with what you may need for the breakfast of your firtst day at the villa: milk, coffee, corn flakes, eggs and orange juice, and a bottle of olive oil produced by us.
In the great hall there are many tour guides of Tuscany, Siena and the other surrounding places of interest, a map of walking paths, and also useful phone numbers, and information on supermarkets, internet points and shops.

Further details outdoors:
The private garden allowes to relax in the hammock or on the park benches, or to enjoy the coolness in the shade of the gazebo, and a meal or a snack, maybe even cooked on the barbecue.
A beautiful sunset can be seen from the swimming pool located at a higher point than the Villa. It is surrounded by olive trees and set in an evocative landscape of vineyards and woods that stretch as far as the eye can see. Such a position gives total privacy. The night lighting system allows one to take a swim after the sunset, under the starlit sky, when the peace and tranquillity of the place reach their best. The swimming pool is open from the April 30th to September 30th and lounge equipment and umbrellas are included.

"We've had a wonderful time and we are very glad we picked here instead of the more populated and touristy Chianti region. A big thank you to Serena and her family for a warm welcome and their helpfulness. Congratulations on a wonderful conversion of this special property! We are very sad to leave...."
Pauline, Ross, Tristan (6) and Xanthe (2) - June 4th, 2005 - England, UK

"Dear Villa San Donato, we've loved to stay here! After a very warm welcome our wonderful holiday began. We've visited Siena, Florence, the Chianti area and we had a fantastic day in San Gimignano, where we enjoyed a Medieval Festival. We had a great time at the pool and we especially liked sitting on the outside terrace at night, barbecuing or eating all our favourites Italian dishes. Very special thanks to Serena for arranging baby chairs, a baby bath and taking care of everything. We hope to visit you again!"

"We have had a fantastic time at this terrific Villa! The setting is very peaceful and we have enjoyed watching the swallows skimming the pool. The main room is very impressive... as has been the variety of insect life!! Day trips to Siena, San Gimignano, Saturnia, Monte Oliveto and Pienza have all been very enjoyable. The supermarket in the village is also very good! Tank you Serena and fa,ily for allowing us to stay at this great Villa!"

We made trips to Siena, Florence and Perugia. Serena, congratulations on winning the Palio for te first time in 44 years! Both you and your grandparents have been very friendly in welcoming us! Thanks a lot."

"Our last morning at Villa San Donato... what an incredibly delightful week it has been!!! Serena and her grandparents (Giorgio and Giuliana) were fantastic hosts! The villa is really well situated in the heart of the Tuscan region and we were easily able to take day trips to many of the "must see" sights and cities of this gorgeous and sun-blessed region of Italy. Thank you so much!"

"Thank you so much Serena for a wonderful week at Villa San Donato. We have loved being here and greatly appreciate your kindness and hospitality. The house and pool are superb and we are returning home refreshed and happy, with much to remember. Grazie mille per un bellissimo soggiorno!!! Speriamo di tornare presto, ciao!"
Iain, Mary, Tess and Angus - 2nd September, 2006 - UK

"We came here with tiny babies looking for the most unspoilt part of Tuscany and can return refreshed knowing we found it. The chapel is simply enchanting, the outside dining room is marvellous and the pool a delightful heaven. We visited Siena, San Gimignano and Monteriggioni, that we truly reccomend. Giuliana and Giorgio were most welcoming and the biggest thanks has to go to them for having the foresight and tenacity to turn a ruin into such a lovely, idyllic retreat. Complimenti!!! As we head back to London we can do so relaxed in the knowledge that not all Tuscany has turned into Chiantishire and that it is possible to be far from the maddening crowd, completely surrounded by luscious forest. E' stato un piacere e speriamo di tornare presto!!!"
Tom, Amanda and Alexander, Nicolas, Helen, Richard and Alice - 9th September, 2006 - UK

"Many thanks to Serena, her boyfriend Simone and her grandfather Giorgio for a wonderful stay! We really got to relax and see some of the really unspoilt Tuscany. We also got to sample a home-cooked Italian supper, courtesy of Serena and Simone, which was really fantastic (would reccomend tha Carbonara and Chocolate Soufflè)! The local supermarket, butcher and pizzeria were great. Everyone was very friendly and accomodating to our needs. Had trips to Pisa, Siena, Montevarchi (to a Prada outlet store!!!) but no deer to be seen. Would definitely come back!"
Caroline, Douglas, Rosaline, Shane, Mary, Robert, Albert, Sandy and little Sean - 16th September, 2006 - Joannesburg, South Africa

"We didn't know what to expect... but we were certainly not disappointed! What a lovely place.. so peaceful at the Villa and so beautiful all around the area. Our party ranges in age from 1 year old to 78 years: it is certainly perfect for everyone! Thanks for a lovely home for us to stay in!"
Mike, Ali, Peter, Janet, Rupert, Matilde, John and Sue - 29th September, 2006 - UK

"What an autumn! Wonderfully glorious! Great welcome. Fantastic Villa and facilities. Early morning mist over the hills.. deer jumping across the forest paths.. cowbells blooming on the pathway.. olives ripening on the branches.. grapes shining in the sunshine.... Truly reccomend: peace and tranquillity."
Mike, Theresa, Eamon, Mary, Jack, Susan - 14th October, 2006 - UK

"We arrived on the first morning of a long summer away from the office, looking for somewhere to relax.. we certainly managed that! We were greeted with a fantastic meal served on the terrace by Serena and Simone. Their kindness and hospitality has been with us all week. For the end of May, the weather has been more like England in March, if not wetter. On the bright side it made spending a day in Florence, Siena, Montepulciano, Buonconvento much more pleasant than if it had been 35° like last week. We leave here refreshed and happy. I think we'll be back! Thanks again.."
James, Julie, Emma, Alice, Olive and Olive - May, 2007 - UK

"We arrived, a group of 7 plus a 2 year old. Needing a rest, sunshine and good food and wine. Finding our "retreat" was not easy and caused a few "discussions" in the car! We were all apprehensive about the house, but we were bowled over when we finally saw our new home! Now it's time to go further on our vacation but we leave relaxed, suntanned and a little sad. Visits to Florence, Siena and San Gimignano satisfied all the cultural passions and left life long impressions. Good food was in abudance and frienship sealed. Thanks!"
Katja, Kryn, Bert, Keom, Harry, Corrie, Jo-Anne, Samuel - July, 2007 - UK and NL

"We stayed here for a glorious month. Our families joined us in relays. We all had a wonderful holiday. We visited Florence, Siena, Pienza and many smaller but no less lovely towns. We have seen wild boar, deer and lots of smaller wildlife. The view from the pool and the Villa itself will remain in our memory of his idyllic holiday."
Sue, Noel, Walter, Lesley and families - July, August, 2007 - London, UK
