The Tuscany region
INTRODUCTION Tuscany is a charmed land, equally blessed by the genius of man and nature, and often by the combined efforts of both. Think of the vineyards: rows of baby green vines that manage somehow to march in arrow-straight formation up the gently rolling hillsides, bounded by single files of darker green cypress trees, snaking sandy roads leading to rust-coloured farmhouses and moss-coated castles, symmetrically rounded hilltops surmounted by towns so homogeneous as to seem one single building. Every inch of land has been sculpted, first by the elements and then by generations of inhabitants whose goals were always twofold: make the land produce as much as possible, make the land as beautiful as possible.
TRAVEL SEASON The main tourist season in Italy and tuscany runs from mid-April to the end of September. The best time to visit Italy nad tuscany is the slower season, from April to June and in September/October, when the weather is usually good, the prices are lower and there are fewer tourists.
HISTORY The region now known as modern Tuscany corresponds to the former area of Etruria. However, the Etruscans were not the first people to grace this land. It was in prehistoric times that man left indications of his presence and there is evidence of small tribal settlements up to the Iron Age. The first evidence of the Etruscans was from around 800 BC from which time the land began to change towards its modern format.
The history of Tuscany is crammed with centuries of changes and struggles from the Etruscans to being swallowed by the Rome Empire. Then the destruction of Rome by the conquering German Barbarians, Odoacre and the Goths. This was followed by being governed by the Lombards and the Franks, through the Middle Ages to the Medici and the Renaissance. Then finally into Modern times.
It is interesting to note that Tuscany's wealth came, not from the land, but from commerce and from its unique position at the centre of trade routes within the Mediterranean basin. In fact, the emergence of Florence, Lucca, Pisa, and Arezzo, and the evolution of the new city-states of Siena, Pistoia, Prato, and other towns such as San Gimignano, Volterra, Livorno, Colle val d'Elsa, and Grosseto is due to extensive trade.
Neverthless, throughout most of its history this whole area has been a prosperous region for agriculture and a central point for communication for road, sea ports, railways and industry. Now it is well established as a great tourist location.
Siena area
Charming Siena is one of the prettiest, if not the prettiest, city of Italy. This well-preserved medieval town extends across 3 hills, its austere buildings and angular lanes seem to transfer the visitor into another time. Tuscany is one of the most popular regions of Italy and a region worth visiting for a stay in the holidays. The impressive cathedral of Siena, whose facades are striped with light and dark marble, towers over the city and fascinates with its magnificently decorated interior. In the heart of the city, lies the Piazza del Campo in the shape of a seashell. This is the scene of the famous Palio, a race on barebacked horses where, twice annually, representatives of the different city districts compete against each other (2nd July and 16th August). From the city hall tower, the Torre del Mancia, a lovely view opens up over the old town and the surrounding Campagna Senese. This landscape, marked by soft hills. with farmsteads dotted across the hills and surrounded by the impressive, ever-present cypress trees, is the Tuscany out of the picture books. Most films made in Tuscany are made in this area. As accommodation in the region of Siena in Tuscany you can rent an apartments in the town of Siena or cottages in the countryside.

Alistair C., Australia 'Casa Toscana was just perfect. The house is furnished to a very high standard and the pool and gardens are delightful. The location is very central for visiting Siena, Florence and Pisa and other of the fantastic Tuscan towns. The owner is most helpful and came around within 15 mins when we needed him to check something out. We would highly recommend to friends and family.'
Tracy H., England We liked the peace and tranquility of the house and the fact that it wasn't very far from San Rocco, so we could get food from the shops there.
Cathy G. (USA) "We absoluted loved the villa. From an accommodation perspective it was pretty much what we were expecting but the grounds and garden area were much larger and more beautiful than we imagined."
Chris J. (USA) "Overall we were very pleased with our stay and greatly enjoyed the villa experience. We all really liked the “cooking class” and felt it was good fun. We really liked everything about the villa."
Susanne H. (Germany) Casa Toscana is a really amazing place in the heart of Tuscany. I have been there for one week with my family. We found it just perfect, because it is a real quiet and peaceful place, but at the other hand you reach in short times the main attraction of this area. My children liked very much the big garden which is far away from any traffic, my husband and my mostly enjoyed the open fire place in the comfortable living room as well as th intimicy of the bedrooms. we also enjoyed to cook there or do some nice BBQ outside. for all shopping we reached only in some minutes in the nearby village with its big supermarket. Also the owner, Mr. F. was mostly helpful from the very beginnig and gave a great assistance to us with much real insider tips. we wish him a good work also in the future with many nice clients - grazie per tutto!
