The West Country / Devon region
If you enjoy walking, you will love this area - the East Devon Way passes our front door inviting you to enjoy some of England's finest coastal, field and woodland paths, a walker's paradise! You're on the doorstep of Britain's longest and most popuar National Trail - The South West Coast Path.
Whether you take a short stroll, or stride out on the cliff tops, you can find your own piece of this special coastline. High cliffs and pebble-strewn shores, rolling hills cut by sparkling rivers and flower-filled, wooded valleys - East Devon is endlessly enjoyable.
The lush green rolling hills are a feast for the eyes. The fields are divided by high hedgerows full of wild flowers. The deep lanes with hedgerows high on either side are an experience in themselves. No fast cars here because it's often single file - but oh so pretty!
Visit Devon in May when wild flowers are at their best. You will find a host of wild flowers in the fileds, wild hyacinth and bluebells in the more shaded areas and woods.
This part of Devon enjoys its own mild mirco climate, and has record sunshine hours during the summer months.
Sidmouth / Sidbury area
Cherry Tree Cottage is ideally situated for enjoying both coast and countryside. Sidbury is a picturesque floral village with many listed and character cottages. It has beautiful little church with one of the few remaining Saxon crypts. The village has a butcher/general store, public house, and soon to open restaurant. You will find a large Tesco on the outskirts of Honiton and Waitrose is just over a mile away in Sidford.
The Blue Ball at Sidford, a beautiful thatched public house and the Hare and Hounds at Potts Corner, Sidbury are two of the finest local pubs. The carvery at the Hare and Hounds is superb!
SIDMOUTH Sidmouth's attraction lies not only in the unspoilt town but also in the natural beauty of the coastline, countryside and the gardens which more than once have earned it the 'Britain in Bloom' award. The area is one of Britain's loveliest, for just relaxing, or touring the local area. Sidmouth is just 3 miles away with its character buildings and imposing red cliffs which retains much of its old world charm. You will find an abundance of individual shops, eateries and coffee shops to enjoy. In fact, Sidmouth has every amenity you could require including, cinema, theatre, indoor swimming pool, cricket club, nearby golf, horse-riding and much more.
Sidmouth Folk Weeks begins on the first Saturday in August, and attracts visitors from around the world. Events take place all around the town and seafront and has an amazing atmosphere.
LYME REGIS Just few miles east is the lovely resort of Lyme Regis with its beautiful beaches, individual shops, galleries and fossil shops. Now designated 'A World Heritage Site' the Jurassic coast stretches along Lyme Bay. Join an organised fossil hunt along the beach. Full details from the Tourist Information office in Lyme.
Excellent public transport networks serve the entire area - from Exeter, right along the coast to Poole in Dorset. There is a bus stop a stone's throw from the cottage.
The picturesque fishing village of Beer is close by with its Quarry Caves well worth visiting. Branscombe, one of England's longest villages, has a Norman Church and a footpath leading through fields to the sea.
HONITON - FAMOUS FOR ITS POTTERY, LACE AND ANTIQUE SHOPS Honiton, in the other direction is 'heaven' for antique and curiosity hunters. If you are interested in antiques, Honiton offers hours of browsing, a wide range of individual shops, tea rooms, and cosy pubs and of course the twice weekly street market. You will also find a Leisure Centre with tennis courts and swimming pool and an 18 hole golf course is just on the edge of the town. Locally there are excellent pubs and restaurants offering good value lunches and evening meals.
EXETER A 20 minute drive brings you to the City of Exeter - a must for visitors. From the stunning Cathedral to its Historic Quayside, all the best bits are within walking distance.
