The West Country / Devon region
Sidmouth is an ideal base to explore Devon, from Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast to the city of Exeter and beyond to Dartmoor and Exmoor, there are pretty country lanes and thatched villages and plenty of footpaths and Coastpaths for the walkers. Birdwatchers are well catered for on the Exe Estuary and Axemouth and plenty of sightseeing from the Caves at Beer to the Cathedral at Exeter.
Sidmouth area
Sidmouth is noted for its old fashioned charm, individual shops and the many gardens. Connaught Gardens have wonderful views of Lyme Bay, tearoom at 'Jacob's Ladder' and the free band concerts every Sunday evening throughout summer. Sidmouth town, beach and promenade, tennis courts and indoor swimming pool are a short, level walk.
Sidmouth Golf Club is less than 5 minutes drive (walkable but uphill). There are plenty of other courses nearby including Woodbury Country Club which also has the Nigel Mansell Museum and go-carting and about 5km to driving ranges. The famous Donkey Sanctuary is also about 5km drive.
The first Saturday in August is the start of the Folk Festival, this long established festival draws visitors from around the world. All the events take place around the town and Esplanade and although it does get very crowded, there is always a friendly atmosphere.
