The West Country region
Delightful area to explore either by car or coach trips. Dartmoor is close by. Plymouth and Salcombe (yachting) are well worth visiting. The charming town of Budleigh Salterton is not far from Sidmouth. There is a very cheap day fare when you use the local buses and you can travel anywhere they go, for a whole day; senior bus passes are accepted. A great shopping area is Exeter, and a visit to Exeter Cathedral is a must - they also have their own restaurant and serve a delightful lunch. Catch a bus or walk to the water-front. Remnants of the old water pipes run under the city and have been there since Roman times, with sections still in use - a tour is fun.
Many interesting places to visit in the surrounding area. Sidmouth is a Regency town nestled between red cliffs with stunning coastal scenery. Sidmouth has its own brass band in the Connaught Gardens that has won many competitions. Bowling is a favourite pastime. The Donkey Sanctuary is a favourite place to visit and they have a restaurant and shop. For walkers there are great walks along the cliffs and the river. There are shops galore in the town of Sidmouth and some very good pubs and restaurants. A good supply of tourist information available in flat. Good bus service.
