The Heart of England/Peak District

Shropshire is a land of mountains, valleys, hills, moors, forests and low grade farmland. The landscape is often rugged, with crags and rock outcrops very common, especially in the west and around the Clee Hills, and was for the most part gouged by glaciers during the ice age. It contains a myriad of rock types, and is widely regarded as the geological capital of the UK, with Wenlock Edge being especially highly regarded by geologists.

Shrewsbury

Kenley is a small village and civil parish in the English county of Shropshire. It is located in remote countryside, atop a ridge at around 180 metres (590 ft) above sea level. The towns of Much Wenlock is 10 minutes (5 miles), Shrewsbury 20 minutes (10 miles) and Bridgnorth is 20 minutes (12 miles) away.

"Almost to good to be true"

We found this pair of flats just by chance. We didn't know Shropshire except for the Darwin connection and so just chose somewhere that looked pretty. It turned out to be the most delightful village, with a cute cottage and perfect hosts. I am really wracking my brain to think what could have been better. We originally thought we would not have a car, and our hosts were adamant they would pick us up at the train station. This generosity and attention to detail continued throughout our stay. The two flats (there is an upstairs and a downstairs) were bright and clean and had everything you could need. We had fresh scones and fresh flowers waiting on arrival, and small baskets of vegetables from the garden appeared on occasion. You need to like animals to stay here. The cows wake you up in the morning with their munching! And there is a cat and two dogs that live in the main house. You are also close to the main house so it is no good if you want a feeling of total isolation. We liked the proximity. We could walk in the gorgeous garden, inspect the veggies and have a beer in the garden pagoda and watch Shrewsbury light up in the evening.
We hired bikes from a great little shop in Telford (they were delivered by the lovely owner) and cycled everywhere. There was so much to see - tumbledown abbeys, Roman ruins, stately manors, the beautiful countryside. We also drove here and there for meals in some "hatted" restaurants.
On any holiday something goes wrong (for us it was the Internet); what happens afterwards is the key issue. Our hosts moved heaven and earth to get things fixed. This was their attitude - to make our stay relaxing and enjoyable.
And it was. Dix points!
