The Heart of England/Peak District

Like all the best places, Shropshire is easy to reach from almost anywhere but far enough away that it's stayed unspoilt and comparatively unchanged.

So if you are looking for a short break this spring and a chance to get away from it all, de-stress, clear your head and indulge a little - Shropshire could be just the answer to your prayers.

Tucked away on the English and Welsh border, Shropshire has, of course, been surprising visitors for years. Indeed ever since those clever Romans discovered Shropshire as an ideal place for some decent R&R, Shropshire has been offering comfy beds, good food, proper ales and the like to the weary. All served up with the sort of warmth and hospitality that encourages friends to return. It's a tradition that continues today.

Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury, Shropshire's county town, founded by the Saxons and most extensively developed by Tudors, lies within a giant loop of the river Severn and is famed for its castle, spires, abbey, parklands and half-timbered medieval houses. But while you marvel at all those gorgeous black & white buildings, let's not forget that most of them remain just what they've always been: shops. And that the Shrewsbury variety of shop tends to be quirkier and more interesting than elsewhere.

Ironbridge, the World Heritage Site, is also just 20 minutes away as well as the market town of Much Wenlock, birthplace of the Modern Olympics and Ludlow, 'foodie' capital of the area.

For walkers, there is fantastic walking country around the South Shropshire Hills, including the National Trust's Long Mynd and Wenlock Edge.
