Home description
The cottage was converted from a substantially stone built croft house in 1979 into a well-designed family dwelling. It stands in a prime position elevated alongside Kenmore burn, commanding fantastic views over Loch Torridon towards Beinn Alligin, Liathach and Beinn Eighe. There are ten houses in the township of Kenmore. There is a public telephone nearby within the township.
Flora's House - is fully equipped and comfortable throughout and will sleep from two to five people Maximum. Ideal for two couples with a child. There are three bedrooms in the house. (1-double, 1 twin & 1 Single). The very small single bedroom is accessed through the main double bedroom. ( ideal for a child). There are two bathrooms, (one being en-suite).
Downstairs in the sitting room there is an open baxi grate fire & a wood- burning stove in the dining room. Coal & Peat are provided for the open fire in the sitting room. (It is a very cosy cottage). Making this an ideal retreat to get away from the stress of modern day living.
We do have Sky TV - If guests want to they can bring their own viewing cards with them and watch the channels that they subscribe to at home.
On some occasions - during the evenings a family of Pine Martens may visit the cottage from their den in the woods. (Pine Martens are rare within the UK). Our guests at the cottage have been treating the Pine Marten’s to custard cream biscuits, bird nuts and they are also partial to Jam sandwiches!... Pine Martens are very shy creatures, but are happy to come close to the cottage when all is quiet outside - one was even seen sitting on the window ledge watching our visitors inside.

The Highlands region
The Applecross/ Torridon region is an area of stunning landscapes and outstanding natural beauty. The magnificent Torridon hills rise in steep terraces with quartzite caps overlying rich sandstone bedrock. There are numerous Munros to challenge hill climbers – Slioch, Liathach, Beinn Alligan and Sgorr Ruadh to name a few. Less demanding walking may be found on the Applecross Peninsula itself following the numerous paths which linked the townships before road traffic.
The spectacular topography of the area and the stunning views may be fully appreciated on the Bealach nam Bo. This was a former drove road and now single track public road running from Tornapress west to Applecross. The route crosses the highest pass in Scotland at 626 metres above sea level. On a clear day the views are inspiring and include a unique perspective of the Cuillin on Skye although the car driver will be fully occupied negotiating the series of blind summits and hairpin bends on the road.
When out walking in the hills, you may experience all four seasons in the one day. Please go prepared with waterproofs and extra layers.
Shieldaig / Torridon/Wester Ross area

Another good web site to look at is for the mountain & Sea guides on the Applecross peninsula:- http://www.applecross.uk.com/msg/index.htm
The sea lochs of Torridon and Shieldaig provide opportunity for sailing, kayaking and fishing. The Gulf Stream flows along the west side of the Peninsula and in addition to moderating the climate adds to the enjoyment of water sports.
If you have an oppurtunity we certainly recommend a visit to "Inverewe Gardens" - check the web site first for seasonal opening dates & times:- www.aboutscotland.co.uk/land/inverewe.html

The Torridon-Applecross area is renowned for it’s scenic beauty, ideal for walking, climbing , bird watching and fishing (both sea and fresh water). Shieldaig is 7 miles away with a couple of shops and a licensed hotel. Applecross is approx. 15 miles/25 minutes drive, where wonderful food can be had, Applecross also has a Store/Post Office and an excellent pub that specialises in the fresh sea food of the area.

Kenmore is one of a number townships dotted along the coast of the Peninsula. The townships typically comprised 6 – 10 croft dwellings clustered around a sheltered inlet or bay on Loch Shieldaig with the residents depending on in-shore fishing and crofting as their only means of income and food.
The Applecross Peninsula in Wester Ross only became accessible to road traffic in the mid 1970’s. Prior to that, the small coastal communities could only be reached by sea. Although single track roads now run around the edge of the Peninsula, it remains one of the most unspoilt areas in Scotland.
Secluded sandy beaches are a short drive along the Applecross Coast Road.
Kenmore is a sheep farming community & the cottage stands amid the communal grazing grounds –
Otters and Dolphins have occasionally been spotted swimming and playing in the sheltered sea Loch of Kenmore. Every season there is an abundance of wildlife to watch from the door step of the cottage - from Cuckoo’s in the spring to flocks of field fair on their migration route in autumn - Truly a nature lover’s paradise!
The sea lochs of Torridon and Shieldaig provide opportunity for sailing, kayaking and fishing. The Gulf Stream flows along the west side of the Peninsula and in addition to moderating the climate adds to the enjoyment of water sports.
Further details outdoors: Within the shelter of the two porches at the front of the cottage there is a paved patio area with picnic table - so visitors can enjoy alfreso meals. To the side of the cottage is a small grass area with enough room for a couple of deck chairs to be errected in order to take in the glorious views.
Just outside the boundary fence you will find a heavy duty washing line and to the rear of the cottage is a narrow store room with an automatic washing machine.
There is ample car parking space adjacent to the garden gate.

VISITOR COMMENTS:-
Mr & Mrs Baxter (8th August - 15th August 2009) I just wanted to say thank you for the great time my family and I had staying at your place in Kenmore. Everything was as good as I had hoped and the Applecross Peninsula was as magical as I had hoped.
Mr & Mrs Ready and family (4th July - 11th July 2009) Thanks very much for such a lovely holiday. We really enjoyed the use of your cottage and the views were spectacular. We were very lucky to see the Pine Marten every night and he has certainly got into the habit of coming for an evening snack. He seemed to enjoy the Hob Nobs we put out! Thanks again we hope to be in touch in the future as we loved the cottage and the area.
Mr & Mrs Barrett & family (23rd May - 30th May 2009) We've just got back (sadly) from a great week and wanted to thank you for our wonderful holiday. Floras House is super, what a position and everything was spot on. The weather has been a bit mixed but the last two days were amazing. Thank you again for a fantastic cottage.
Steve & Jackie (16th August - 23rd August 2008) Flora's House is a most delightful cottage in every respect; we found it had the feel of an old Scottish cottage, it was both cosy and practical. I have stayed in 4 cottages now in Wester Ross and I have to say that Flora's House is the best yet. The view from Flora's House is unbeatable especially at sunset when the Torridon mountains are backlit in a most amazing warm, red glow - stunning. It was good to have no direct neighbours and to have an amazing view from the front windows; we really felt a part of nature. In short, the only thing missing was another week !
V. Jones from Wales (26th July - 2nd August 2008) Came in need of sanctuary and discoverd just that amidst the breathtaking views and tranquil pace. This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Anne & Derek (12th July - 19th July 2008) We really enjoyed our week, despite the daily showers. We had a magic moment one evening when we sat in the sunshine at the side of the bay in Kenmore and watched two dolphins swim right across the bay in front of us.
