The Dorset region
If you enjoy the country life, Dorset is for you. In the Spring our countryside offers bluebell woods to walk in, spring lambs gambling through the fields and the first of the signets at the famous Swannary at Abbotsbury. As the year moves on there are country markets to visit and beautiful gardens open to the public with frequently held plant and local produce sales.
Both Dorset and Somerset hold Art weeks during the summer months, when local artists open their homes to the public. There are caves to visit, potteries and working farms, Longleat is a must if you have children. Big agricultural shows are a whole day of country entertainment for the family and don't forget in August the Dorset Steam Fair - attracting thousands of visitors from around the world every year!
Bath is a wonderful and historic place to visit with the Pump Rooms and Roman Baths and at the end of November their Christmas street market is a magical place to make all your festive purchases. The races at Wincanton are popular through out the year and Boxing Day is a favourite for all the family. This is just a taste of the things going on in Dorset so come and discover it for yourself.
Stowell is a rural community with three Dairy farms in the surrounding area. Clare Cottage is said to have originally been an Ale House which was built for the Irish railway workers completing the line form London to the south. They apparently couldn't get a taste for our local cider and downed tools till they were promised an ale house where they could enjoy a pint of something more to their liking at the end of a hard days labour. Later the property was converted into two farm workers cottages, which eventually fell into disuse and remained abandoned for many years. Now fully restored it is a family home and the stables are a relaxing and cosy place to take a break. Our nearest town is the ancient town of Sherborne with its beautiful Abbey and pretty shops.

"Lovely accomodation, perfect for a relaxing weekend"
This was exactly what we had hoped for if not a little bit better! Lovely furnishings, welcoming hosts and a lovely area to stay for a quiet weekend away. The Stables was lovely and clean and had great facilities. Thank you for having us!
Thank you for your lovely review, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay. Do come and visit again soon. We are converting our big barn and stables into holiday accomodation before next Spring, so we will have even more to offer you then - we will keep you posted!

"Cosy, clean and attractively furnished, this was ideal for a relaxing break for two in rural Dorset."
We enjoyed our week at 'The Stables'. Attractively decorated, with good quality furniture, including a comfortable king-size bed, this is an imaginative conversion of a stable block. The living area and kitchen, whilst quite compact, were fine for two people and the woodburning stove ensured we were toasty warm in the evening. The owner made us very welcome and it was good to have a supply of fresh eggs available. The location is rural but also handy for touring Dorset's historic towns and coastline.
Thank you for your lovely informative review, we enjoyed having you and hope to see you again if you are down this way, there is still much more to see!

Thank you for your kind review. We enjoyed having you as our guests and look forward to seeing you again in the New Year. Have a wonderful Christmas. Regards Sarah and David

"Not what we wanted"
It was a lovely cottage with nice pubs nearby. Enjoyed the fire. We hadn't expected the owner to let herself into the cottage while we were out. Fair enough perhaps if staying in the cottage with B&B, but as we were self catering we had expected our privacy to be respected.
I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay and felt I had not respected your privacy, but as discussed on your departure - not only did I need to leave you a note in respect of the wood-burner, but I also had concerns over the black plastic bin bags you had attached to the insides of the bedroom windows in the property. On entering The Stables, my concerns were not unfounded, as you had driven numerous drawing pins into the solid oak window frames in order to achieve your objective! You had also helped yourselves to extra logs from my wood store without even asking - although you had already been supplied with ample logs and kindling of the appropriate size for the wood-burner. You then proceeded to chop up kindling on the terracotta floor in the living room, presumably with one of the kitchen knives, as there is no necessity for me to provide an axe. I was only alerted to this as my husband was in his workshop one evening and heard loud banging coming from the Stables and asked me to find out if there was a problem. We have always enjoyed sharing our little corner of the Dorset countryside with likeminded people who appreciate and show respect for the properties high standard and cozy atmosphere. We pride ourselves on a personal service and the ability to gauge the right amount of contact with our guests. On this occasion I must tell you I was much relieved when you left and if any further incident had occurred prior to your departure I would have felt compelled to ask you to leave.

"Nice cosy place"
It was a very nice place was friendly atmosphere and the owner was easily approachable and helpful, all the information needed was available including attractions close by and local pubs etc. The property was very clean and well fitted. The location was just what was expected and want in the country surrounded by farms and fields. there was local pubs close by, supermarket just up the road, there was plenty to do during the stay. The whole experience was great from the view to the bed, nothing really bad to say other than the weather could have been better but still didnt ruin the stay.
Thank you for you very informative review. I think I may leave information on the mattress make in The Stables as so many people comment on how comfortable it is. I felt you really got the juice out of your stay as you did so many things – glad you enjoyed yourselves. Sorry I couldn’t fix the weather for you!

"Lovely little cottage"
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Stables - everything about the experience exceeded our expectations and made for an incredibly relaxing weekend. Ideally located just ten minutes from the A303, the cottage is right in the middle of the countryside and offers easy access to great local pubs (including the Kings Arms in Charlton Hawthorne.) The breakfast hamper was a fab little perk, too.
We are happy to hear your stay was all you hoped for and the breakfast was an experience worth having. Thank you for your kind review.

"A relaxing retreat"
This was a lovely stable conversion, beautiful views, surrounded by lovely countryside, tucked away in a rural location yet not far from towns, lots of walks nearby,no tv signal when we visited but dvds to watch if you wanted but we bought a book each to read
I am glad you both had fun discovering our lovely countryside and that you found The Stables to your liking, we enjoyed having you as our guests. I will check my advertisement to ensure it is clear to future holiday makers that there is no TV at the property at all - which I know is a little unusual. For those who really love their TV we do have wi-fi. I hope the D.V.D’s selection made up for the lack of a TV and that you enjoyed a few board games.
