The West Country region

The West Country is one of the most favoured parts of Britain as to climate and scenery. It has a long and fabulously varied coastline with inland landscapes often of sublime beauty. Many many fine market towns and a marked absence of industry. The historical sites vary from the prehistoric ruins of Stonehenge and iron age hill forts through Roman remains and mediaeval abbeys and castles. The region is very favourable to gardening and there are many fine gardens to be seen.

Sherborne, Dorset

Sherborne and the surrounding villages are part of a limestone belt which means most of the buildings are created from the beautiful local stone which changes colour from cream to yellow to brown according to the position along the belt. The countryside is beautifully undulating and well wooded with venerable old oak trees dotting the landscape. Sherborne is thought by many guides to be the most beautiful town in Dorset with its stunning abbey complete with its fan vaulted roof. The town is also home to two castles. The 'new' castle was once the home of Sir Walter Raleigh and has been the home of the Digby family for over 300 years. It is open to the public. There are also a number of notable National Trust properties nearby, including Montacute, Tintinhull and Stourhead.
