Enquire nowThe West Country / Dorset region
The West Country enjoys a milder climate than much of England and has been a popular holiday destination for over a century. Dorset, the most easterly county, is a well kept secret. It is filled with lush green, rolling countryside, broad river valleys, ancient towns and villages and no motorway. Dinosaurs were among the earliest inhabitants and left their skeletons to posterity embedded along the Jurassic Coast. The Romans came here, fighting their way north against the native defenders in the many iron age forts and staying to occupy Maiden Castle, in the county town of Dorchester. This is part of Wessex the ancient kingdoms of King Alfred the Great and Old King Cole of nursery rhyme fame. 2 Saxon kings are buried at Sherborne Abbey which is noted for having one of the finest fan vaulted ceilings ever created. This is Thomas Hardy's valley of the dairies where some of the finest dairy products are still produced today including the delicious Dorset Blue Vinney cheese made in the heart of the Blackmore Vale. Farmers markets are held weekly at local towns around the region. Dorset is a great base for walking, riding and cycling or just enjoying the gentle ambience of its many ancient towns and villages.
The Sherborne, Dorset / King Stag area
Dorset has a number of National Trust houses and gardens to visit including Montacute, Kingston Lacey and Lytes Cary. Athelhampton and Sherborne Castle are also a must to visit. The Lyme Regis Fossil Fair (4-6th May) is essential for budding earth scientists. For literary enthusiasts Bridport hosts its very own Festival and the bi annual Dorset Arts Week showcases the wealth of artistic creativity there is locally. As well as the County Show for displays of all things agricultural and equestrian, Stock Gaylard celebrates all aspects of the Oak Tree over the August Bank holiday. The famous Dorset Steam Fair, in early September, attracts enthusiasts from all over the world as does the ever popular Sturminster Newton Cheese Festival (8th-9th September). This year Weymouth plays a significant part in the Olympics and celebrates by putting on a number of stunning firework displays to mark the special events. The first one is for lighting up the Queens Jubilee year on 4/6/2012.
