The West Country region
East Pennard is a small, old village located in a conservation area approx 1 mile off the A37. The most famous local landmark is the site of the Glastonbury Festival which is within a few minutes walk. A little further away in the next village is the internationally famous horse racing trainer, Paul Nicholls and his stables. A trip to the local pub, the Manor Inn, means you've every chance of bumping into a jockey from his yard.
Living at Carpenters Yard is like living on holiday. Permanently. The house enjoys all the things you want for luxurious living, high pressure wet room showers, wifi throughout, underfloor heating, real fire place, plenty of natural light, quiet location, huge skies so on a clear night you can see an array of stars and planets. Then all the usual things you'd expect, like American double door fridge/freezer, larder, aga (only on in the winter as too hot in the summer), electric oven, gas hobs, microwave, etc, etc.
7 sets of doors along the south side of the barns, open with views over the countryside. The garden is surrounded by flower beds bordered with lavender bushes and there are 2 large raised beds given over to meadow flowers which look stunning in the summer months. A well stocked herb bed outside the kitchen means you can choose from a variety of flavours - fennel, thyme, bay leaves, oregano, mint, chive, rosemary - when cooking.
The garden offers plenty to occupy the children - ground level jumbo trampoline, treehouse, swings, climbing frame - and if you go through to the fields and orchards beyond, there's plenty for them to explore. Just check which fields have cows in them as they do get moved around from time to time!
East Pennard offers plenty of walks without you ever having to get into the car so you can be as secluded as you like. And the village residents are very welcoming so there's no doubt you'll feel right at home, at Carpenters Yard. Our nearest neighbours have their very own landscaped natural Victorian pool which villagers are always welcome to use and is a joy when the temperatures soar. Also, just down the road at the Rectory is an astro tennis court which, on request from the caretaker, is often available.
The west country of England enjoys a lot of sun and its fair share of rain. Temperatures in the summer range on average from 19C to 24C. Last year, we enjoyed sustained periods of dry weather with temperatures well into the 20s. It was perfect. But whilst we can't predict the same perfect weather for your stay, we can provide you with all the tools for an enjoyable holiday. So, if you're forced to stay inside for a time and don't want to visit anywhere, check out the DVD library, light a fire and snuggle down with a movie or two.
Within 2 miles of Carpenters Yard is the Royal Bath and West Show Ground which hosts a number of major events, including the New Wine and Soul Survivor Festivals. Shepton Mallet is 10 minutes in the car for supermarket shopping and Kilver Court - designer fashion factory outlets, including the much heralded Mulberry shop.
Glastonbury can be reached by car in 15 mins. It has much to offer the tourist looking for enlightenment. With it's multitude of crystal and healing shops and spiritual monuments including the Glastonbury Tor, Glastonbury Abbey, Chalice Well and Glastonbury Thorn, the town and it's environs will not fail to transport you to a parallel universe!
Wells, a little futher north of Glastonbury, is only 20 mins by car and offers more traditional spiritual reflection in the shape of the famous Cathedral and Bishops Palace. A delightful market town, with an array of gift shops and eateries. There's a market every Saturday. Fast becoming the town of choice for London's artistic media, is nearby Bruton. A medieval town with plenty of original buildings to delight at, a new art Gallery opening in 2014 and the fabulous At The Chapel restaurant/bakery/B&B which is busy all year round.
Also nearby is the quaint village of Mells, up and coming Frome (with the best Artisan Market I've ever been to - first Sunday of every month - and Babington House, part of the Soho House boutique hotel collection.
Bath and Bristol can be reached within an hour's drive.
