The Red Sea Riviera/Sinai region
Sharm El Sheikh became established as a dive destination in the 1980s when divers were drawn to this beautiful and remote area of Egypt, where literally the desert meets the sea. Gradually, hotels and services built up around the dive community and this developed into a thriving community for both divers and non-divers alike.
Now 2 airport terminals bring millions to this European friendly 'City of Peace'. Tourism brought workers (predominantly men) from Cairo and Alexandra, to staff hotels, shops and other services, and diving is a big industry for both Egyptians and Europeans.
The Red Sea, especially around Sharm El Sheikh, is crystal blue, with hosts of brightly coloured fish and coral. Turtles and the occaisional shark. There are many documented dive sites and a number of ship wreck sites including the famous 'Thistlegorm' (one of the world's top 10 wreck dives) which provide hard landscaping for coral and marine life to colonise. Many sites are accessible from the shore, and divers and snorkellers benefit from the sheer wall drops and excellent visibility in this area.
Sunbathers and beach enthusiasts are in their element, with empty beaches, beach side bars or full sunbed facilities available at many locations, and kids will love the beaches, pools and water parks.
Egypt is hot, and Sharm is no exception. It makes an ideal winter sun holiday location, with temperatures around mid 20s, and athough never cold, a fleece can be necesssary for evenings. In the height of summer (June - August) temperatures can reach nearly 40 degrees and shade or the Montazah breeze is very welcome.
Sharm El Sheikh is not the cultural end of Egypt, there are no pyramids and cities here. Cairo is a 6 hour bus ride or an hours flight (around £60 return), but there is the Ras Mohammed National Park covering both land and sea which are a must to see.
Other common activities include diving/snorkelling, boat trips, quad bike/camel/horse riding/bedouin dinners/star gazing in the desert, and trips out to places such as Dahab which is a quieter town with a wide prominade along the side of the beach.
Sharm El Sheikh is a very friendly, family orientated area - the Egyptians love children, and staff are often working away from their own families and will make a fuss of little ones.
The busy parts of town are Naama Bay and Nabq, which have shopping malls, supermarkets, small traditional shops (selling jewellery, perfumes and papirus, clothing, textiles and leather goods) restaurants, pizzerias and all the big brand fast food outlets. Alcohol shops and bars are fairly common, and women alone here are generally safe especially if dressed sensibly - this is a muslim country and although Sharm is very European orientated, micro outfits are asking for trouble especially if using public transport or back street shops.
