The Isle of Wight region

Situated just off England's South coast and less than 2 hours from London, the UK's Holiday Island (and Dinosaur Capital!), the Isle of Wight is the perfect destination at any time of year.

Whether it's by foot, bicycle or from the top deck of a double decker bus, some of the best ways to enjoy the landscapes and beauty of the Isle of Wight are by leaving your car behind.

The Isle of Wight is the ideal destination for a watersports or adventure activity holiday, and when you consider its geography it makes sense. An Island of 147 square miles, surrounded by water, that depending on tide and wind, is sheltered on one side and ferocious on the other. Couple that with a massive range in terrains and landforms and you have the perfect place for a whole range of adventure activities!

While there are watersports to be pursued all year round, the Island hosts a number of boating events to focus all that adrenalin, many of which take place as part of the world famous sailing regatta that is Cowes Week in August.

Check out Isle of Wight events listings below for your guide to what's happening on the Isle of Wight in 2014. There really are events for everybody from rock festivals to cycling and walking festivals, hedgelaying competitions to ploughing matches.

The Isle of Wight host's two multi-award winning music festivals, the legendary Isle of Wight Festival takes place each June and Bestival every September. In addition, there are many smaller more intimate music events and festivals.

Whatever your age or interests there are lots of things to do in Shanklin. The Esplanade, lined with traditional seaside games, amusements, cafes, hotels, restaurants and bars, is the perfect place to while away your day. Getting from the Esplanade to the cliff path with access to the town and Old Village is made easy by the cliff lift.

Shanklin offers a lovely mix of the seaside and open, green space with some fantastic parks and gardens. Rylstone Gardens provide the most tranquil and beautiful spot to sit and soak up the sunshine. Look out for the extensive programme of events at the Bandstand located in the Gardens. The famous Shanklin Chine, a gorge with rare plants and delightful waterfall, is quite simply unique.

Lose yourself in the history and character of Shanklin Old Village packed with charming thatched cottages most housing wonderful, unique gift shops and tea rooms.

"Everything you could want in a holiday flat on the isle of Wight"

The Courtyard is very close to the old village in Shanklin with local amenities (convenience store and lots of restaurants) in easy walking distance. The flat is quiet, well-furnished and located next to the garden at the rear of a large Victorian house. The owners Richard and Miriam are very friendly and helpful and have thought of just about everything including a lovely cake to welcome visitors.

Great comments which we are very happy with.

"The Courtyard. Excellent, clean, comfy and cosy, but spacious."

We have recently returned from a very pleasant holiday on the Isle of Wight. Our accommodation, The Courtyard, went a long way to making this holiday a success. It was lovely to return each day from exploring the Island, to this cosy comfortable flat. The king size bed was an important factor for us and we found this to be very comfortable. Miriam and Richard go to great lengths to welcome their guests, supplying many useful items in the kitchen, bathroom and even a selection of pillows. Part of the welcome was a delicious sponge cake, which lasted us a week. Thoroughly recommended. The Courtyard is well positioned, a short walk to Shanklin Old Village and chine, and also the main town centre, offering several stores to buy provisions, and a theatre. The island is beautiful, many quaint villages and beaches .We visited the Island many years ago when our children were young, this time it was as a retired couple, to see places suitable to ourselves. We still have not seen it all, but we will return, hopefully to stay at The Courtyard again.

Delighted with this review as it confirmation that we are providing all that our visitors would like to make their holiday enjoyable.

"Just perfect.... A Home From Home!"

An excellent little cottage, perfect for 2 - pretty much every single thing you could think of is included within the spec... including a very delicious freshly baked cake!
Great location, only a minute or so walk to Shanklin Old Village, good sized parking space right outside the property. Lovely gardens & use of outside garden table/chairs. Fantastic owners, very helpful & ideally suited to the hospitality business.
Inside - very good proportions with ample space for 2. Very quiet and peaceful location, pretty much guaranteed an excellent nights sleep. Utility/Laundry room very handy along with private enclosed courtyard.
Kitchen equipped with everything you could possibly need. Freeview TV & free wifi available.
It was very hot when we stayed - around 30 degrees but the cottage remained lovely and cool throughout the day & night - perfect!
IOW was beautiful - lots of little villages and small seaside resorts to visit. Quite a few nice (& clean) beaches for such a small island. Ferry service really simple for someone who's never taken a car on one before, even if you miss your slot, you just join the queue for the next sailing, same applies if you're early for your booking.
A few supermarkets nearby - Morrisons, Tesco, Lidl, Coop.
Brilliant choice of good pubs with great beer gardens - The Taverners in Godshill & The Pointer Inn in Newchurch had great outside spaces, decent real ale & good food cooked using local/homegrown produce.
Would recommend a stay here for anyone who's never been to the Isle Of Wight.

Very pleased that the cottage was everything you hoped for in holiday accommodation.
