The County Cork region

A beautiful coastline, delicious food and one colourful town after another… It's no wonder Corkonians are so enthusiastic about their home county

Welcome to the “People's Republic of Cork” and to the island's largest county. Sprawling all over the south-west, this is the place that produced Republic of Ireland soccer legend Roy Keane. This is the county that takes in everything from Cork city to some of the island's most fertile farmland, its wildest peninsulas and its most colourful islands.

With a rich historical and maritime legacy, East Cork has a truly unique variety of attractions to offer the visitor. It is a haven for family holidays with a huge range of activities and attractions to keep the whole family entertained for hours.

Shanagarry village is situated on Ballycotton Bay just 10 minutes drive from the Blue Flag Beach at Garryvoe and 5 minutes drive from two smaller local beaches - one on at Ardnahinch on the right on the Garryvoe Road and the other on the left on the Ballycotton Road (no toilets I'm afraid at either of the two). Visit the Garryvoe Hotel for good food and drinks.

Just a 10 min ride away is the is the hilly fishing port of Ballycotton with good restaurants and pubs, much favoured by deep sea anglers. It offers fantastic views over a boat filled harbour to a steep island crowned by a lighthouse. There are cliff walks, and inland an extensive marshy bird sanctuary.

Shanagarry is well known for the renowned Ballymaloe Cookery School, the home and gardens of celebrity chef Darina Allen, which is just 5 minutes walk from the holiday home. Enjoy their delicious home cooked Pizza's on Saturdays.

Other attractions in the village are the internationally acclaimed Kilkenny Design Store which operates as the Shanagarry Design Store/Restaurant (Enjoy an excellent lunch or just a coffee with their famous scones/cream plus free WiFi - just 5 mins walk away) and the well known Stephen Pearce Pottery. The village has a local store/petrol station and the Goal Post Bar and Lounge where you can enjoy food and drink (5 mins walk away).

Take the family out to Fota Wildlife Park ( 30 mins away) and walk amongst animals from all over the world at Ireland's Wildest Attraction!

The nearest golf course is 15 mins away at the Castle Martyr Resort in Castle Martyr, although there are several others locally.

Midleton is the nearest large town, which is 20 mins away and has banks, independent small shops, supermarkets, farmers market, cinema, a large selection of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes. It also home to one of Ireland's premier tourist destinations - the Old Midleton Distillery which includes the largest pot-still in the world, whilst there you can savour the remarkable story of the Jameson Experience.

Take a drive out towards Clonakilty and walk along the fabulous sands at Inchydoney.

If you want to drive further afield - then please don't miss out on the fantastic scenery, lakes and mountains in Kilarney.
