Ewe Cottage
About the home
The one roomed farm cottages are recently renovated to a high standard, they provide the comforts of modern living whilst retaining their traditional feel.
They are sunny, warm and comfortable and beautifully planted with fruit trees and climbing roses. They are a perfect get away for couples or interconnecting doors between cottages can be opened making them suitable for families.
The cottage is on the grounds of Ballymaloe Country House Hotel, which has an award winning restaurant, where guests at the cottages are welcome to dine. The cottages are also surrounded by a working farm, and guests are welcome to feed the pigs and collect eggs for breakfast.
There is plenty to do on Ballymaloe grounds such as browsing through the Ballymaloe Shop, relaxing for a morning coffee in the cafe, attend one of the many activities going on in the Grain Store. We also have a seven hole golf course, tennis court and outdoor swimming pool on the grounds, as well as walks through the gardens, woodlands and bird sanctuary.
For our foodie guests there are two super Farmer's Markets within driving distance which are worth a visit, and the Ballymaloe Cookery School offer a range of courses including afternoon demonstrations, children's cookery courses and day courses. Also every Saturday one of the dining rooms in the cookery school is transformed into a pizzeria for the afternoon where they make the most delicious pizzas in their wood fired oven topped with original local delicacies.
A fifteen minute drive away in Midleton, there is the famous distillery where Jameson Whiskey is made and they offer great tours. For those who like the out doors there are also some fine Golf Courses within a 20 minute drive and a 10 minute drive from the cottages there are beautiful coastal cliff walks, beaches and mackerel fishing in the summer with Rory Allen. There are also bicycles available which you can take to explore the area.

The County Cork region
'Cork is far and away Ireland's largest county, but nearly all visitors simply ignore its massive hinterland of dairy farms, dotted with low mountains and evergreen plantations. The coast's the thing, and in an east– west spread of over 170km it unfurls an astonishing diversity. Cork city, the capital of the self-styled "rebel county", is renowned for its independent spirit, and packs a good cultural and social punch in its compact, vibrant centre, on an island in the Lee estuary. With its excellent restaurants, cafés and specialist food market, the city also sets a high culinary tone, which much of the rest of the county keeps up. Further reminders of a prosperous seafaring past can be seen hereabouts in the port of Kinsale, a low-key, pleasurable resort.' (Rough Guides)
The Shanagarry area
Shanagarry is a small village but despite its size there are several activities for all the family to enjoy. The Stephen Pearse Pottery is well established and the charming, rustic, show rooms are well worth a visit. A more recent addition to the area is the Kilkenny Design Center, which has an array of ceramics, jewellery and gifts. Further along the road in Garryvoe there is a lovely beach with children's play area that is a perfect place to go for a walk or, if the weather is fine, take a swim. In Ballycotton there is a small fishing harbour where you can take a boat out mackerel fishing in the summer, enjoy a stroll along the cliffs, or, if you prefer, have a pint in one of the many pubs and relax with the locals.
A little further a field in Midleton, there is the famous Midleton Distillery where Jameson Whiskey is made. Here also is the lovely Farm Gate Cafe which is a nice place to stop for refreshments. A little way beyond Midleton is Fota Wild Life Park and Arboretum where a family could spend the best part of a day visiting the exotic wildlife and gardens. A few miles further on is Cobh Museum reflecting the cultural, social and history of Cobh town which is famous for being the last port of call for the Titanic.
