The West Country region
Devon's rolling pasture, narrow lanes, thatched cottages and great pubs and restaurants are always close to the sea - a constant theme and the strongest lure of the area, bathed in rich colours more readily associated with the Mediteranean. Beautiful Torbay is nearby with beaches and the enticing and characterful seaside towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, whist Darmouth and Salcombe are also in easy reach. Amongst the cities not to miss nearby are Exeter wih the beautiul medieval cathedral and Plymouth with all the history and the bustling 'Barbican' old harbour. Both cities also offer excellent shopping!
Outdoor pursuits from surfing, paddleboarding, sailing, golf and of course hiking on the Coast Path or in and around Dartmoor are all immediately to hand or in easy reach. Woodlands and Crealy Adventure Parks are nearby and great for families, not to mention 'Segway' and 'Quad Bike' Safaris, and 'Go Ape!' for the more adventurous.
Cornwall is also in easy reach with dramatic coasal secenary and picturesque fishing villages such as Polperro and Mevagissy and the first rate Eden Project.
The roads in Shaldon were made for horse and cart and so are very narrow and some are unsuitable for cars but it does mean its safe for walking and cycling. There are car parks within walking distance but how good will you feel walking through our lovely lanes, and using the boats, ferrys and other transport to explore this wonderful county.
From Shaldon beach, a foot ferry will take you across to explore Teignmouth, the ferry has been in operation since the 13th century. It is the fastest way to reach Teignmouth!
You can enjoy Boat trips, fishing trips, and water-sports as well as Shaldon and Teignmouth beaches. There is also a second lovely beach in Shaldon which can be easily reached through a smugglers tunnel.
Just near the tunnel there is a childrens zoo, fascinating for both young and old with family of merecats and many other animals.
The energetic can play pitch and putt golf up above the Ness, or walk the South West Coast Path towards Torquay, where the views across the bay are quite spectacular. For the serious golfer, across the estuary one can find Teignmouth golf club. Shaldon also is in easy reach of both Newton Abbot and Exeter race courses and of course Dartmoor is on the doorstep with its open vistas and its quaint villages.
