The rounded front entrance steps lead into an inviting ground floor hallway complete with old mariner's lamp overhead. Guests can sit back and relax in the cosy living room. Fitted with original parquet flooring and benefiting from a comfortable sofa, mismatched armchairs with throws and squishy cushions, Sky digital flat screen TV with DVD player, pretty window seat, wood-stacked fireplace, handmade coffee table, magazines and cosy lighting, the room provides all the comforts of home.

The cottage is also conveniently equipped with free Wi-Fi access, an iPod player and a selection of books, DVD's and old fashioned board games.

The separate dining room is ideally suited for gatherings of up to six, where guests can entertain themselves around the rustic farmhouse table.

To the rear of the cottage, a brand new fitted kitchen offers guests the opportunity to rustle up tasty homemade meals. Featuring a ceramic sink, cooker hob, oven, microwave, dishwasher, electric kettle, fridge freezer, washer dryer, toaster and a full range of crockery and cooking equipment, everything one could need is to hand. The beautiful tile work, wooden worktops and quality interior finish encourages guests to unwind with a cup of coffee or glass of wine.

A charming stable door from the kitchen leads out to the adjoining private walled, decked courtyard, full of coastal ambience and complemented by a table & chairs for 6 set underneath pretty 'fairground' festoon lights; a place to enjoy memorable summer evenings and ambient alfresco dining.

A handy side gated passage leads from the front of the property directly into the courtyard, perfect for dropping off sandy beach paraphernalia to the back door without the hassle of carrying it through the cottage.

From the entrance hall, a steep staircase - covered with original Victorian hemp runner and with a double hand rail - leads to the quirky tranquility of the first floor. Comprising two spacious bedrooms and a contemporary bathroom, the upstairs offers a practical layout to suit either couples holidaying together or parents with children.

To the left, the master bedroom offers an understated and elegant space in which to unwind. The king size French oak bed sits on weathered floorboards and is complemented by a luxurious, handmade Vi-Spring mattress. Guests are guaranteed a wonderful night's sleep and well deserved lie-in, further enhanced by stylish blackout blinds throughout. This room also boasts an original fireplace, striking chest of drawers and wardrobe; and various thoughtfully sourced vintage pieces.

The second 'couple-friendly' bedroom also has a unique identity with a striking bespoke driftwood headboard, a plump window seat and sheepskin rug for tired feet. Perfect for children and adults alike, although slightly smaller than the master bedroom, you will feel no less pampered staying in this room. Offering the convenience of a zip & link king size bed converting to two singles if required, the calm interior further features a rustic tallboy and useful hanging space.

The smart 'metro' tiled bathroom features a handcrafted copper towel rail and industrial steel porthole mirror. Old Pepsi crates used as shelves add an earthy touch to the sleek fitted bath tub & shower, WC and wash basin.

This charming period cottage is situated along Ringmore Road with on-street parking outside the front door and further along the road.

Additional parking can also be found nearby, at the King George V's car park, just a 3 minutes' walk away.

Cook's Cottage is situated close to The Shipwright's Arms, a quaint pub with its origins from the shipyard days of Ringmore where the nearest slipway still exists behind the pub along the sea wall. A popular pub with the locals, it is described on Trip Advisor as a "peaceful haven to pop in for a drink and enjoy cheerful chatter" and as well as serving good ales and ciders. The landlady Lynda makes a delicious crab sandwich throughout the summer months which can be enjoyed in the pretty walled beer garden.

The cottage is within a minute's walk from the village's main street, Fore Street where you can enjoy a morning cappuccino at 'The Coffee Rush', buy a fresh loaf or yummy cakes from Shaldon Bakery, or relax over lunch after a spot of crabbing at the Clipper Cafe.

Another local favourite, Cafe Ode is nestled higher up on 'The Ness' overlooking the bay and serving fish and chips to die for and delectable homemade ice creams. You are also situated within a stone's throw of four welcoming pubs and numerous village shops in this quaint fisherman's village.

If fine dining is your thing, try out the award winning 'Ode Restaurant' (sister to Café Ode) just a few steps from the property and run by Tim Bouget, a Michel Roux trained chef. But be sure to book in advance as they seat just 24 in their cosy front room setting!

Steeped in history as far back as the Celts, Saxons and King James 1, the pretty village of Shaldon offers the perfect setting for a fun and lively coastal break. The village is full of local life & traditional shops, offering something for everyone, and plays host for nine days each August to the Shaldon Regatta, reputed to be the oldest in the UK.

A host of village amenities are also on the doorstep including the passenger ferry crossing to Teignmouth (said to be the oldest river crossing in England). Lovely walks lead along the Ringmore riverside, Shaldon beach in the opposite direction and the striking South West Coastal Path beyond. A 9-hole golf course, small zoo and the Homeyard's Botanical Gardens can also be enjoyed. Children will love discovering the ancient smuggler's tunnel, the only way to access the famous Ness beach where you can enjoy BBQ's on the beach looking out to the open sea. Further afield, a treasure trove of National Trust sites await, alongside the leisure pursuits of Dartmoor.

Shaldon is perfectly accessible for year-round stays, offering easy access to the vibrant delights of Torquay (20 minutes' drive away), the historic market town of Totnes and the Exeter, Plymouth and London train service (which runs from Teignmouth Train Station).

**We just spent an idyllic Easter weekend with friends at Cooks Cottage and it was fabulous. The village is gorgeous, the surrounding countryside a short walk away, the pubs and restaurants varied and top quality.

The cottage itself is easy to find, very tastefully presented with every home comfort available plus some extras too. The furnishings are super comfortable and the beds are sumptuously luxurious. The kitchen is equipped with everything you could need and every eventuality has been thoughtfully predicted.

The West Country region

Teignmouth:

Teignmouth also has that relaxed holiday ambience generated by its people and buildings, such as the Georgian crescents found in the town. Teignmouth is a true historic seafishing and industrial port and also a classical seaside resort. Both industry and fishing are now much reduced, but watching the ships and pleasure boats passing the Ness between Shaldon and Teignmouth is always enjoyable.

Teignmouth boasts a promenade, a Victorian pier, a swimming lido, plenty of shopping, a theatre, very safe main beach, great walks, a railway station and parks.

Add to this the great selection of restaurants, such as the Crab Shack, and local pubs touching the water front, beach huts sitting proud on the "spit" and the ambience is complete. Teignmouth is easy to reach by car, just 15-20 minutes from Exeter by car or by train. You can even arrive by boat provided you can find a mooring.

For fishermen Teignmouth is a true haven, with a large beach front, and an estuary that sees a good number of bass and flatfish caught by locals every year. Float fish off the spit on a full tide with sandeel, spin in the estuary or beach cast into the surf (watch the surfers however when an easterly is blowing).

The West Country ~ Devon:

South Devon has a coastline of spectacular rugged cliffs and headlands, interspersed with lower-lying areas, sandy beaches and the five distinctive river estuaries of the Dart, Avon, Yealm, Erme and Salcombe.

The coastal scenery also includes reed beds, sand dunes, shingle ridges, mud flats, salt marshes, and the freshwater lake of Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve. This variety provides habitat for a diverse range of wildlife.

The South West Coast Path National Trail running along the whole stretch of heritage coast, provides access to spectacular scenery, long views across bays and the English Channel, interesting beaches, and a scattering of coastal villages & historic towns such as Salcombe & Dartmouth.

Dartmoor:

Dartmoor is known for its plethora of Bronze Age remains; stone circles, stone rows and burial chambers and its clapper bridges, it is also well known for mists and boggy areas, though stories of the latter are often much exaggerated.

Two Bridges - is a central location of Dartmoor National Park and is mostly the meeting point of walkers and bikers. This is a bridge that was of much historical importance for it was the only routine road running across Dartmoor. The bridge had a small settlement around it and was famous for its potato market.

You can also find a small quarry that is proof enough of little industrial activity around it. There is also a famous hotel close to the bridge that dates back to year 1794. This hotel has now grown up to become The Two Bridges hotel. The two bridge area is the focal point of many events and is very rich in terms of antiquities available, there are lots of antiques relating to the Bronze Age period.

The Garden House - is a very romantic place. If you are with your partner then I suggest you must visit the Garden House for sure. The remains of the building around it is from the medieval period. To put it in words of Alan Titchmarsh, "You got to be mad to miss it" and I am sure you will vouch by this statement once you have seen the place yourself.

It is a huge area, approximately ten acres and all of it landscaped into a beautiful garden. Amidst this charming garden you have a tea room where you can sit back and relax. They also sell plants, so it would be a romantic idea to buy a gift for your partner? Your partner will be totally charmed and will fall in love with you all over again.

Shaldon

Shaldon:

Shaldon has a very close but welcoming community. A tightly woven fabric of small backstreets with lots of small cottages, it remains one of the best kept secrets in Devon. House prices actually reflect this however.

It is quintessentially English especially when you see the locals playing bowls on the small central village green. You could even think the Spanish Armada may be appearing off the Ness at any moment! The green, as you would expect is overlooked by the local pub and each Wednesday in the season there is a local gift market, the 1785 day! People dress up in Georgian costume and there are often entertainers, including local musicians.

The green is central to the Village and leading off from this you can explore further inland (but not too far) or walk to the water edge where at low and mid tide you can walk down the estuary. The estuary stretches across to Teignmouth its larger neighbour and can be reached by Ferry from the beach! The main channel is relatively deep water which is why you will see the occasional larger industrial boat moving up of down the far channel under guidance of the Shaldon and Teignmouth Pilot.

In 1909 the ferry moved into the modern era and installed an engine. No more oars and when the tide is in flood you may imagine they were relieved when fuel replaced muscle! ! The boats have been traditionally painted black and white for 300 years and remain this way today! Records show that a ferry has been operating since the 13th century! That's before the Pilgrim Fathers reached their new home!

If you walk to the top of Shaldon, along the shore front and then narrow road, you will find the Shaldon Wildlife centre, which is a dedicated conservation “zoo”. This “Trust” is next to the public car park and this is the easiest place to park to reach the Ness beach.

Shaldon Approach Golf ~

The Ness, Ness Dr Shaldon, Teignmouth, Devon TQ14 0EY

Shaldon Approach Golf is considered one of the best approach courses in the South West, with breathtaking views of Teignmouth and the Teign Estuary. Shaldon is an 18-hole course and has hole distances of 60 - 120 yards ( 7 holes over 100 yards).

Teignmouth:

Teignmouth Golf Club is justifiably proud of its heritage. The course was designed by the legendary Dr Alister MacKenzie and opened in 1924, some 9 years before he completed his most famous work at the Augusta National, home of the US Masters.

Teignmouth's course is situated near to the South Devon coast and, at 800 feet above sea level, it commands spectacular views of the sea and nearby moors.

The 18 hole moorland links presents a great test of golf for players of all abilities. Features include six varied and challenging par 3s and no fewer than 11 two-tier greens, a true MacKenzie trademark.
