Dolphin Cottage
About the home
Dolphin Cottage is one of the oldest cottages in Shaldon. It has a thatched roof and old wooden beams. It’s thick cob walls keep it warm in winter and beautifully cool in summer. It is in a quiet square, about two minutes level walk from the beach and shops. The cottage has a double bedroom and a twin bedroom with a cot in it. To reach the twin bedroom, you have to walk through the double room, which is usually fine for families, but sometimes doesn't suit friends who are sharing the cottage. The bathroom is downstairs.
Being so close to the beach is ideal for families. No need to get dressed on the beach after your swim - just pop back to the cottage. It is safe to swim on an incoming tide, and there is always plenty of sand to play on. At low tide, there is a large area called "The Salty", where there are pools full of shellfish and small fish. If it's windy on the nearest beach, you can go through the smuggler's tunnel to The Ness Beach, which faces a different direction. There's a children's Zoo, a Botanical Garden, a Pitch and Putt Course and a Bowling Green and plenty of places to eat and drink. If you like amusements and the facilities of a town, you can cross the river to Teignmouth, either by the bridge, or on the passenger ferry.

Further details outdoors:
Outside the cottage is a small enclosed garden, and garden chairs are provided. There is an outside toilet, which is useful when the bathroom is occupied. The garden gate opens onto Crown Square, where you might be able to park sometimes. The roads around the cottage are, on the whole, too narrow for cars, having been built for horses and carts! This makes it very safe for walking and riding bikes. However, parking can be difficult in the summer. There is always room to park at the top of the hill behind the cottage, and it is a pleasant walk down, through the Botanical Gardens. Since you will probably want to make use of the excellent boats, trains and buses, there is no need to use your car very often.

South Devon is famous for it's wonderful beaches and beautiful rolling hills. Close by is Dartmoor, wild country with miles of walks and stunning views. Exeter and Torquay offer all the facilities of a large town, while Teignmouth, Dawlish and Newton Abbot are thriving small towns with many attractions for holidaymakers.
The Shaldon area
Shaldon has two beaches, useful shops, good pubs, restaurants and cafes. There is a children's zoo, Botanical gardens, a cliff path for the energetic, and level walks for the less so! The Bowling Green and Pitch and Putt course are open to visitors. The public transport is excellent in this area. There are buses to Torquay and Teignmouth, a passenger ferry to Teignmouth, and trains to Exeter, Newton Abbot and beyond. One favourite activity is a walk along the sea wall at Teignmouth as far as Dawish, and then a train ride back.
There are many events throughout the year. Every Wednesday from 2nd June to 15th September there is a craft day and Farmers Market on the village green . In the early evening there is entertainment for the children including Maypole dancing, and Punch & Judy, followed in August, by a one act play, with audience participation, continuing the saga of Zebediah Hook. There will be 6 performances this year.
The Classical Music Festival in June is very popular, and there are frequent art exhibitions.
June 30th - July 3rd there is going to be a Scarecrow Competition. There will be scarecrows lurking all around the village - the last one was great fun.
On Saturday, July 2nd there will be a "Party in the Park", held in the Botanical gardens nearby to the cottage.
On the first Saturday in August, the Water Carnival takes place, and there is a nine day Regatta finishing on August Bank Holiday Monday, with events for both locals and visitors.
Teignmouth, just across the river, has sandy beaches, a pier, a lido and a promenade lined with attractive flower beds. Take the foot passenger ferry across the mouth of the River Teign from Shaldon or walk across the bridge and along the footpath.

We have just returned from a week at Dolphin Cottage in Shaldon. The cottage itself is very quaint, spotlessly clean and very well equipped. Both my husband and I and our girls (2 and 4 years old) loved staying there. Getting our people carrier into the square was a challenge, but we managed it and were able to park outside the cottage without a problem. Shaldon itself is also lovely, the girls were thrilled to be so close to the beach and we were lucky enough with the weather to be able to spend a relaxing couple of days playing in the sand and sea. We ate out in Shaldon several times and always had good food. We also found plenty to do in the surrounding area including steam trains and boat trips from Paignton, Paignton Zoo and popping over to Teignmouth on the ferry. We would all highly recommend this as a great family holiday and we hope to return again one day! Response: We're glad you liked the cottage. Shaldon is perfect for small children, there is so much to do,especially if you are lucky enough to have some good weather. We are pleased to hear that you will be coming back, and look forward to hearing from you again. |

You must must stay in Shaldon at Dolphin Cottage. It ticked all the boxes of my fantasy for staying in a 16 th century thatched cottage by the sea. The cottage was very clean and well presented, well equipped too.The interlinked bedrooms suited as well and the children loved the sun room at the front and we found it useful for buggy, wellies, seashells etc Very nice to find buckets, spades, crab lines etc in the cottage and a few toys. Loved the location as we could go to the beach without getting in the car and also to the ferry to go across to Teigmouth. Actually you can easily get around by public transport from the cottage getting on the ferry or on the bus. We parked the car by the sea front for free didn't bother us not parking outside the cottage( my other half couldn't get the car up the narrow streets anyway :-) ). Lots of information left in the cottage which was nice(loved reading the history of the cottage) . Few nice personal touches like the owners left some milk for us and they sent a nice thank you card with my deposit back. We'd love to go again my 5yr old son keeps asking "are we going to the lady's house again?" Response: Thankyou for your lovely review - it makes all our hard work worthwhile. You commented in our visitor's book that you found 10 am too early to get ready to leave on the last day. As a result we have managed to arrange for our caretaker to start half an hour later, so next time you come you will be able to stay till 10.30. Best wishes, Helen B. |
