The West Country region

This tranquil village setting offers the perfect base for exploring the Dorset countryside, whether that's on foot or with the house bikes. Explore Shaftesbury with its famous Gold Hill, Sherborne with its independent boutique shops or the World Heritage Jurassic Coast.

Primrose Cottage is located in the Dorset village of Marnhull, just a short stroll to our award winning village shop, butcher, hairdressing salon and 2 pubs one of which The Crown at Marnhull featured in Thomas Hardy's novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles.

Don your walking boots and explore Dorset's Blackmore Vale with footpaths right outside the cottage door. Explore the Wessex Ridgeway or the breathtaking views from Hambledon and Hod Hill. If cycling is your thing why not explore the quiet lanes around Marnhull and cycle to a country pub for lunch, we have maps and information on local rides for your use.

See Stonehenge the world heritage site and spend the afternoon exploring the Cathedral city of Salisbury or Take a tour of Wilton House. Make a day trip to Bath and visit the Roman Baths or treat yourselves to a pamper day at the Thermae Bath Spa.

For Garden Lovers you can't miss the chance to visit Stourhead. This National Trust property with its Palladian Mansion and follies is perfect for a picnic and is picturesque at any time of year. Visit the nearby gardens of Athelhampton, Abbotsbury, Mapperton, or Larmer Tree.

Head to the Jurassic Coast only around an hour by car. Search for fossils on this world heritage site, visit Lulworth Cove or Chesil Beach one of the finest barrier beaches in England. Sandbanks and Studland offer safe bathing and beautiful sandy beaches.

Shaftesbury is 15 minutes drive from Marnhull, the ancient hilltop town, the 'Shaston' of Thomas Hardy's novels. With its famous Gold Hill a cobbled street of pretty thatched cottages, which was famously featured in a Hovis Advert. Walk along castle hill which leads to spectacular views over the Blackmore Vale. The town has lots to offer for a day out with boutique shops, a great deli, cafes and galleries and a weekly Farmers Market.

Sherborne is 20 minutes drive from the cottage with its Castle and Abbey antique shops and independent boutiques. We also recommend visits to Old Wardour Castle, Hardy's Cottage, the Cerne Abbas Giant and Milton Abbas village.

"Immaculate cottage restoration beautifully furnished. Perfect for a romantic break"

We stayed in Primrose Cottage 21st - 24th Nov 2013. The workmanship evident in the restored cottage is impressive as are the furnishings & décor. We couldn't resist using the wood burning stove even though the weather barely justified its use!
The cottage is situated in Marnhull village with easy walking access to the village stores & butchers and within walking distance of two pubs. The road that passes the cottage door was quiet in the evening and we were never disturbed by traffic noise. The small rear garden would have been a lovely sun trap - we must return in a month where the sun shines! This is a cottage for both summer and winter visits.
Owner Rachel was welcoming and helpful. Top marks

Our stay at Primrose Cottage was fabulous. Rachel was terrific. She supplied a very nice fruit basket, also milk & eggs in the fridge. The renovations are brilliant! Cottage was comfortable & well appointed. Kitchen was fully supplied. Great general store round the corner. There was nothing we didn't like. We will definitely return.

"Adorable cottage in a very friendly village"

From the minute you open the door to Primrose Cottage it gives you a warm friendly feeling. Everything is finished to a very high standard and nothing is overlooked. From the cosy lounge/diner with wood burner and window seat to the fully stocked kitchen and ground floor shower room. Upstairs the bedroom is very relaxing with wooden beams, luxury bedding and the most beautiful bath you can imagine.

As stated in other reviews there are 2 good pubs, a butcher and village store all in walking distance from the cottage. There are walks from the door and lovely lanes to bike down. Further afield we visited National Trust properties and lovely beaches all within a 1 hour drive from the cottage. There is just too much to do and see in one week with Shaftesbury and Sherbourne also close by.

Rachel and Pete have made an exceptional job of restoring this cottage and garden and continue to be attentive to their guests needs even bringing a smaller saddle for the bike as my feet wouldn't reach the ground. Nothing is too much trouble.

We will definitely return to Primrose Cottage.
