The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
The Languedoc-Roussillon region is blessed with over 300 days of sunshine each year. The beaches of the region are amongst the best in France with "blue flag" status and the beautiful blue Mediterranean. The department of Herault is situated in the centre of the Languedoc region, with notable cities such as Montpellier and Beziers.
Herault has everything you could possibly want from a holiday destination, whether it's swimming in the sea , lake or inland rivers, visiting vineyards and museums, strolling around the markets or hopping on the train to visit some of the beautiful towns and cities nearby.
Sete area
Sete is a very popular port town located on the Mediterranean. Known as the "Venice of Languedoc" , it has numerous canals running through it, an in-land lake to one side and the Meditteranean to the other.
Sete has it all! Beautiful beaches (with restaurants open from Easter to October) within a few minutes of the town, theatres (including the open air Theatre de la Mer), museums (George Brassens, Paul Valéry and modern art), markets (Wednesday and Friday mornings), tours of the fish market, the inland lake and the canals of Sete.
The large tuna boats are beautiful to watch as they return to port in the afternoons with clouds of seagulls trailing after them. The boats are then docked along the quays so there is never a shortage of something to see.
The biggest festival in Sete is the Fête de St. Louis, usually in mid August when the jouting champion of the region is crowned. The jousting consists of 2 boats, manned by rowers, which row towards each other with a man on a platform at the back of the boat. Equipped with a shield and a metal tipped pole, they try to knock each other into the canal. At other times of the year there are numerous festival including the St. Pierre when all the boats go to see and throw flowers in the water and the Fête de la Biere towards the end of the summer.
Sete also hosts numerous music festivals including the Jazz festival in the open air theatre, the Worldwide Music Festival on the beaches.
How to get there
Montpellier airport is approximately 10 km away and is well served by both air and rail. The airport of Montpellier has direct flights from both Stansted with Ryanair and Gatwick with Easyjet. Surrounding airports include:
Beziers (40 mins) - flights from Bristol with Ryanair Perpignan (80 mins)- flights from Manchester with BmiBaby,Stansted and Birmingham with Ryanair and flights from Southampton with Flybe.
Carcassonne (100 mins)- flights from Liverpool, Stansted and East Midlands with Ryanair and flights from Cork, Dublin and Shannon with Ryanair.
Marseille (2hrs)- flights from Dublin with both Ryanair and Aer Lingus. From the UK, Ryanair has flights from Bournemouth, Glasgow, Stansted, Edinburgh and Manchester and Easyjet has flights from Gatwick and Bristol Toulouse (2hrs)- flights from Dublin with Aer Lingus. From the UK flights from Bristol and Gatwick with EasyJet, Birmingham with Flybe and Belfast , Edinburgh and Leeds with Jet2.com.
Nice (3hrs) - flights from Dublin with Ryanair and Aer Lingus and flights from Cork with Ryanair Alternatively you could fly to Paris and get the TGV and arrive in Montpellier 3 and a half hours later. Sete is only 15 minutes away by train.

The apartment is very bright thanks to the three double height french doors overlooking the beautiful square and the remaining rooms overlook the interior courtyard with access to a balcony.
Further details outdoors: The apartment overlooks Place Astride Briand, a beautiful square with a children's playground and a little park with a fountain. Surrounding the square are numerous restaurants and cafe and the main pedestrian centre of the beautiful town of Sète.
Within a 2 minute walk there is a stunning park Parc du Chateau d'Eau which is ideal for a picnic .
