The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region

The Languedoc -Roussillon region of France is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled regions of France. In addition to the wonderful climate , Sete is blessed with a micro-climate which means it is cooler in summer thanks to the lovely sea breezes and more pleasant in winter when bright blue skies are taken for granted.

Sete is located between the Mediterranean and the inland lake called the Etang de Thau, which is renowned for the high quality oysters and mussels which are cultivated here.

There are beaches both on the Mediterranean, such as the 12km long stretch of golden sands on the way to Marseillan or else tour around the lake to the towns of Bouzigues or Meze where you can enjoy a great lunch in one of the many port restaurants before taking a dip or relaxing on the sandy beach.

Sete has a TGV station which means that it is very easy to explore the region and the beautiful towns of Carcassonne, Perpignan, Narbonne, Avignon or Nimes - all a handy day trip. The stunning city of Montpellier is
well worth a visit, especially when it is only 15 minutes by train.

Sete area

Sete is one of the most vibrant towns on the Mediterranean thanks to the mix of Spanish and Italian influences. A working port and a pretty town centre with numerous canals, Sete has something to appeal to everyone.

Take a stroll by the port in the afternoon and watch the tuna boats come in, with a cloud of seagulls to welcome them, while the old men repair their nets and chat in the afternoon sun.

There seems to be a festival here for every month and every taste, whether it is the skiing in winter, the jousting in July, or the numerous music festivals such as La Fete de la Musique in June, the Worldwide festival with everything from electro to jazz from the 2nd to the 5th of July, or the renowned festival Jazz de Sete in the open air theatre from the 7th to the 12th of July, to name but a few.

The Fetes de la Saint-Louis is from the 19th to the 26th of August, with street entertainment, jousting in the afternoons and at night culminating in a spectacular fireworks display over the town.

For lovers of kite surfing there is even the French Kite Surfing tournament from the 17th to the 20th of September.

Market lovers will be spoilt for choice with the Wednesday market with fresh produce, olives, cheeses and the stunning flower market. There is also a Friday market, in case you forgot something on Wednesday, or ran out.
For bric-a-brac lovers, there is a flea market every Sunday morning in Place de la Republique where you can enjoy a glass of wine in the colourful wine bar Le Carafon, or slightly further there is a large bric-a-brac market
beside Marseillan, where you can spot a bargain and have lunch afterwards.
