The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
The Languedoc region is blessed with over 300 days sunshine a year. The town of Sète was created in 1660. it was born from the will of three men : Paul Riquet, Louis XIV and the knight of Clerville. Paul Riquet sought an outlet on the Mediterranean Sea for the Canal du Midi of which he had undertaken the digging.
Louis XIV has instructed his minister Colbert to create a port for the shipment of the products of Languedoc. Colbert entrusted this task to the Knight of Clerville who identified the cap of Sète as the most suitable site for the creation of a port.
Within easy reach of Sete, you will find the lovely town of Agde, the pretty port of Marseillan, the historical town of Pezenas and not forgetting the stunning city of Montpellier. Being located on the L'Etang de Thau, famous for its cultivation of shellfish, and being surrounded by great vineyards, Sete is a seafood and wine lovers paradise. There are numerous historical sites in the area, including the Abbaye de Vallemagne, where they still produce great wine.
Sete area
Sète is located in the south of France, at the edge of the Mediterranean, in the department of Herault and the Languedoc-Roussillon area. Sète, "the singular island" kept all its authenticity due to its fishing port downtown, where the ballet of the trawlers constitutes a spectacle all the year.
Also called "Venice of Languedoc" and "small Naples", Sète drew part of its roots from southern Italy, which are evident in the areas of town such as the Quartier Haut, famous for its local artists, the Pointe Courte, a fishing village, and by the coloured frontages of the quays.
Sete is renowned for its festivals, examples of which are: The Italian Festival is held around the end of May. The Festival St. Pierre, at the end of June, involves all the fishing boats going out to sea for Mass on the water to bless the fishermen and boats, afterwards everyone throws flowers out to sea.
The jousting festival in July and August , culminating in the festival of St Louis at the end of August. From the grandstands that line the quays of the Royal Canal , an outstanding battle called "Les Joutes" unfolds before your eyes: a jousting match that takes place on the water.
The boats are propelled by ten oarsmen, fishermen for the most part, with an experienced boat captain at the helm.At the bow of the boats, an oboist and a drummer play the traditional jousting tune just as the two jousters encounter each other for combat. They also play traditional Languedoc tunes between passes. A brass band sitting in the stands gets the fans going and salutes the victors and the more spectacular passes with trumpets blaring! More than a sport, much more than simple folklore or tradition, "les joutes" reflects the very soul of the Sètois!
Sète has beautiful sandy beaches, with the Lazaret beach and Corniche beach being the nearest from the city centre. A beautiful beach, 12 km long stretches all the way to Marseillan-Plage.
