The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
The Languedoc region of France is blessed with its Mediterranean coastline and over 300 days of sunshine a year.
Sète is like an island on the Mediterranean and often called the "Venice of the Languedoc". Located on the flanks of the Mont St. Clair, wedged between the Thau lagoon and the Mediterranean and numerous canals runing through it, Sete is one of the largest ports on the Med.
The Thau lagoon, an inland lake is renowned for its production of shellfish. Other popular towns/villages on the lake include Bouzigues and Marseillan, both having numerous great restaurants. Within 30 minutes you can be in the mountains with stunning scenery, lovely for a picnic and river swimming . Popular villages include Roquebrun and St. Guilhem le Dessert. Pezenas town is also within 30 minutes and renowned for its antiques and quaint old town. The famous Abbaye de Vallemagne is a great place to buy wine direct from the Abbaye, get a tour of the medicinal herb garden or enjoy a classical concert in summer.
The bustling city of Montpellier is also about 30 minutes away, 12mins by train and well worth a visit, even if its just to have a cool drink in Place de la Comedie and watch the world go by. There is an ice-skating rink open year round and a new aquarium on the tram line from Montpellier, which all kids love. The TGV station in the town makes Sète an ideal base to explore the region.
Sete area
Sète is a cosmopolitan city, in which its foreign communities, mostly Italians, contribute to its picturesque ambiance. Sète has beaches within easy reach of the town and its famous 12 km stretch of fine sandy beach which has been awarded the Blue Flag for water quality for a number of years. There are numerous snack and gourmet restaurants open on the beach from March to October. The fabulous jousting competitions take place throughout July and August, culminating in the famous St. Louis festival at the end of August, where all the streets are closed off until 4 a.m.
Sète is a wonderful town for festivals with everything from an Italian festival to Modern Art festivals to skiing festivals, where tonnes of snow are imported and one of the main streets becomes a ski slope, normally in February. Sete has two famous sons, George Brassens and Paul Valery. A visit to their museums are well worth it.
Quai de la Marine, is a quay dedicated to restaurants, offering a restaurant for every taste and budget. The canal provides the entertainment with the parade of tuna fishing boats and fishing nets splayed out in the warm sun. Go down to the old port in the late afternoon and watch the tuna boats returning with a cloud of seagulls. The fish is then auctioned in Le Criee . The tourist office organises regular tours.
