The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Sète is situated on the Mediterranean coast between Montpelier and Beziers and is known as the Venice of the Languedoc because of its canals and its' proximity to the very large Etang de Thau.

Compared to many towns on the coast, the town is very unspoilt and is proud of being the birthplace of Paul Valery and Georges Brassens. There are three excellent museums, if you need to get out of the sun and several outdoor music and poetry festivals.

On the main canal that runs down the principal street there are Jousting matches throughout the summer. These matches that have been taking part since 1666 consist of two special boats being rowed by a crew of 10 towards each other while one of the crew standing on a stage at the back, tries to push his opponent into the canal with his wooden lance!

In the town you will find restaurants for every budget and a fantastic covered market where you can eat oysters and other shellfish while you your shopping.

15 minutes from the loft by car or bus or 30 minutes away on foot there are some of the longest and nicest sandy beaches on the French part of the Mediterranean. In summer they build wooden temporary restaurants and bars where you can rent loungers, change and take a shower, if, that is, you don't want to find an even quieter part of the beach. If you are used to the Côte d'Azur you won't believe how uncrowded it is.

The beaches run along a long strip of land between the sea and the Etang de Thau. This large saltwater lake is famous for flamingos, oysters, sailing and as the starting point of the Canal du Midi. There are several pretty villages around the lake that can be visited by bus or during the summer, a boat service.

To either side of Sète there are other beaches –Cap d'Agde, Frontignan, Pavalas but Sète has the best beaches if you want to relax.

There are vineyards, hiking trails, sailing clubs and golf courses very close by.

Airports - Montpelier, Beziers, Nimes, and a little further away Nimes, Carcassonne, Perpignan and even Gerona and Barcelona if you want to add some Dali and Gaudi culture to your trip.

The TGV from Paris to Barcelona stops in Sète and if you want to avoid the summer traffic, many of the local towns (especially Montpellier and Nimes) can be visited quickly, cheaply and easily by train.
