The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur region
The Hautes Alpes are the southern part of the French Alpes, famous for dramatic mountain passes (as seen in the Tour de France), high peaks and beautiful valleys with stone-build villages and towns. The area has an authentic French feel, with a relaxed pace of life although it boasts some of the most extensive and sophisticated ski areas. There are plenty of snow-sure resorts and lots of glorious sunshine. You are a stone's throw from the Italian border and can skip across in less than half an hour for an authentic Italian meal or to browse an Italian market.
The Vallee de Nevache or Vallee de la Claree is famous for its cross-country skiing with extensive groomed trails passing through stunning villages and scenery. It is an incredibly beautiful and peaceful valley, a magical place to be. Drive 10 minutes the other way and you can be on a ski-lift heading up to the massive Milky Way ski area or the superb and extensive slopes of Serre Chevalier. Briancon, the highest town in Europe is 5 minutes away with all the amenities you need as well as its stunning 'Old Town' and church designed by Vauban and dating back to the 17th century.
The spring flowers and autumn colours make this a fabulous place for painters or photographers to visit during the quieter times of the year and there are also a huge number of hikes and rambles that can be easily followed. We can arrange guides and painting tuition for you or just advise on routes.
In summer there are loads of activities to choose from including white-water rafting, Via Ferrata, mountain-biking (lifts are open), horse-riding, donkey trekking, kayaking, golf, tennis or just lying by the local outdoor pool sunning yourself! There are 300 days of sunshine in Briancon, so the sun is never far away.
