Home description
La Rotonde is a comfy studio apartment situated just 200 metres from the village centre, surrounded by snow-blanketed fields in Le Monêtier les Bains, Serre Chevalier 1500. In my opinion, it has one of the best views in Monêtier village!
The apartment boasts a spacious South-facing balcony which has fantastic views of the pistes, over the whole village, the peaks to the south, in fact right up and down the valley. If I had the chance, I would be sunbathing on this balcony all winter long!
You can see Serre Chevalier's pistes in the distance and watch skiers make their way down – bring your binoculars to spot friends and family, or watch Nordic-skiers skating along the cross-country tracks which are only a five minute walk from your door!
The property is ideal for a couple or a small family. Away from busy roads and the hustle and bustle of the village, you'll enjoy its 'tranquil' location. It's still only minutes to the shops, bars and restaurants and just a nine-minute walk to the pistes – or jump on the free shuttle bus just 300 metres away.
It's very easy to access La Rotonde and there is ample private parking. The apartment is in a great position for enjoying a stunning walk around the South-facing mountains behind the village, or for just relaxing and taking in the views and the fresh mountain air!
The property is non-smoking.

The beautiful Cité Vauban (the old town of Briançon), a short drive from the apartment, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Why not eat in one of the town's great restaurants e.g. Lou Grand Caire, or Le Passé Simple, after a leisurely walk around the fortifications and the magnificent Collegiale church? During the day, the main cobbled street provides entertainment and a multitude of shops for non-skiers.
Here's more about the area:
The whole area enjoys long hours of sunshine and with its good weather record and North facing slopes even fresh snow is retained days after falling. The huge ski areas set in the many rising peaks of the ‘des Ecrins’ national park which fans out over the four main villages on the valley floor, and are linked by ski runs, a comprehensive 77 lift system and a regular courtesy bus service.
New skiers will love the un-crowded slopes and long gentle runs to the valley floor. Once basic skills have been mastered novices will soon progress to the scenic runs at the top of the mountain ensuring that no one will miss out on the magic this mountain range has to offer. Intermediates will be in heaven with masses of cruisey runs that speed you all over the mountains enjoying some of the most glorious scenery in the Alps, with more forest runs than any other resort and a just a hint of moguls to keep you happy.
For those of you who are regulars on the slopes and pay no attention to the colour of the ski run any more there is oodles to keep you entertained. With great on and off piste runs every way you look, it’s a natural playground.
SUMMER
WALKING:
Serre Chevalier is a walker's paradise with simply hundreds of different routes from easy to very hard. For gentle walks, try the paths that run along the canals, the ditches that run around the mountains to catch the melting snow and to irrigate the land. These paths are covered in the needles that drop from the larch that cover most of the mountainside, creating a lovely golden red carpet.
KAYAKING:
This whole region is a favourite amongst kayakers and is considered one of the best places to paddle in Europe.
MOUNTAIN BIKING:
This is a great area for mountain biking. For the less adventurous there are lovely rides through the valley alongside the River Guisane, especially beautiful in the springtime with fields of narcissi.
For the more adventurous, one can cycle round the old military roads that snake around the mountains, taking in the many high mountain lakes, beautiful scenery and plentiful wildlife.
Those that just prefer extreme downhill, from mid-June to mid September you can take your bike up on one of the lifts. During the summer months there are four open, one in each village along the valley, and then just head downhill on one of the many ski runs or woodland paths that lead down to the valley floor.
In total, there are 250 kilometres of pistes and many more trails, ancient roads and old mining paths. There is more than enough never to have to ride the same route twice.
Serre Chevalier / Monetier-les-Bains area
WINTER DESCRIPTION
Le Monêtier les Bains, or 'Monêtier' for short, sits at 1500 metres altitude just a few hundred metres from the border of the Ecrins National Park (a massive mountain range between Briançon, Gap and Grenoble with more than 17000 hectares of glaciers that culminate at the magnificent Barre des Ecrins, 4102 metres.)
Monêtier is one of six villages which make up the commune of the same name. Its 1000 or so inhabitants are well accustomed to the busy winters when skiers and boarders arrive for the snow, and still very evident is Monêtier's farming community – wander through the narrow, twisting streets during the winter and you'll see livestock keeping warm in the basements of Monêtier's 300 year old stone buildings.
This is no purpose-built ski resort – people have been skiing in Monêtier and its surrounding mountains for years and years, and visiting the village's renowned thermal spa for many more. Discovered by the Romans, there are two 'sources' in the village and, after a day on the slopes, you simply have to stroll down to 'Les Bains' with your swimming 'attire' to relax and unwind before enjoying a meal in one of the village's many restaurants. Take note – Monêtier's ambitious plan to replace the existing spa with one of the largest thermal spas in Europe has already begun! Click here to see an artist's impression.
There are more than six different bars in the village where you can enjoy the après-ski or a quick 'apéritif' before dinner with friends, and for those who are looking for late-night dancing, a short taxi ride will take you to nearby Villeneuve (Serre Chevalier 1400).
Monêtier – the perfect base for a brilliant winter holiday:
