The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Hautes-Alpes region
According to local legend, after God created the earth, the sun, the mountains and the sea to shape our planet, the leftovers of each were used to create a paradise: Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, the land stretched between the summits of the Alps and the expanse of the Mediterranean sea. It covers 12,125 square miles at the southeasternmost tip of France.
Hautes-Alpes is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It consists of the southeast of the former province of Dauphiné and the north of Provence. Napoleon passed through Gap when he returned to reclaim France after his exile on Elba.
Serre Chevalier / Chantemerle area
Serre Chevalier is one of the major French ski resorts, although many people have not heard of it! Located in the south part of the Alps, close to the Parc National des Ecrins, it boasts a skiing area of 250 km of slopes and very sunny weather, with 300 days of sunshine a year. Serre Chevalier lies close to the old town of Briançon. The French ski champion Luc Alphand was born in the valley and there is a black run named after him.
One of the best things about Serre Chevalier is the wooded nature of the slopes. There's a lot of variety, and the slopes are wooded till about 2/3 of the way up the mountains. It has good snow and there are still high, exposed areas for those who want them. It's also good for snowboarders, as there are few flat spots, a half pipe and a snow park.
In the summer Serre Chevalier becomes an area dedicated to kayaking, walking, cycling, mountain biking, climbing, rock climbing, sledding, paragliding and generally enjoying one of the most gorgeous mountain areas in Europe.
Briançon the nearby old town at 1,350 meters it is the second highest city in Europe after Davos. The historical centre is a fortress town, built by Vauban to defend the region from Austrians in the 17th century. The town was defended by many other fortresses constructed in the mountains that surround the city.
The three main villages are Chantemerle, Villeneuve and Monetier. Chantemerle has a three ski lifts, a large telecabine, a gondola (or bubble lift) and a chair lift. There are a variety of shops and restaurants and a commercial centre where you can find equipment hire shops, supermarket and the local Dr's surgery.
How to get there
Nearest airports are Turin in Italy which is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and Grenoble in France which is approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. Easyjet, British Airways and Ryan Air all fly there from various UK destinations, however, check the schedules for flights out of ski season as some are limited.
Car hire is available at Turin and Grenoble with all the main hire companies. I have had good prices from Europcar and Holiday Autos. The drive from Grenoble is over the Col du Lautaret, a beautiful scenic drive. The drive from Turin takes you through Montgenevre. If you are hiring a car during the winter, make sure you also hire snow chains or snow tyres just in case!
You could also take a train down from Paris to Briancon. If you fancied driving all the way down it is approximately an 11 hour car journey from the ferry port at Calais.

Guestbook
... we are back after a very enjoyable stay in your apartment.
We had a great time, the studio was perfect, really handy for the slopes and the buses also.
The “Bois de Coqs” is in a great location.
We had a fabulous time and we really appreciated the use of your apartment. Kim was also really helpful.
We had about 36 hours of continual snowfall from our first afternoon after we arrived and that powder lasted us pretty much the entire 2 weeks. We met some great people who really made the holiday.
