BookThe Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Hautes-Alpes region
Scenically Monetier les Bains is in the heart of the Alps, with nearby peaks of around 4,000 metres and the front of the Le Dôme glacier visible from the apartment. The region includes the noted and easily accessible Queyras Regional Park and Ecrins National Park, the latter bordering Monetier.
Climatically the region benefits from a Mediterranean sun (Briançon boasts 300 plus days of sunshine a year) and is famed for its cobalt blue winter skies. Enjoy them year round from our balcony. The occasional house painted in lilac, blue or saffron is a reminder of Provence, as are the olive oils, soaps and textiles found in the local shops and street markets.
Briançon is 15kms from Monetier. The charming walled old town (the cité Vauban) was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 2008 and is well worth a visit for its historical and architectural features as well as spectacular views of the Durance and the surrounding valleys. The modern town boasts a theatre, restaurants, a casino, sports facilities and shopping malls.
The Serre Chevalier / Monetier-les-Bains area
Serre Chevalier is an open sunny valley running in an east/west direction from Briançon (1250 metres) to the Lauteret Pass (2057 metres) containing many unspoilt villages and hamlets.
Monetier is the highest village/ski centre (1500 metres) and combines traditional architecture and ambience with discreet modern developments and facilities for the discerning tourist. Village shops offer such local products as fresh goats cheese, salami made from duck or wild pig, pastries and preserves from mountain fruits, trout from the Guisane river and génépi (a liquer particular to the Alps). Restaurants and bars offer fare ranging from simple home cooking to gourmet menus, with wine cellars to match. A state of the art spa centre opened in 2008 and offers a range of water treatments (including Romano-Irish baths) sourced from Monetier's natural thermal springs.
Mountain holidays are essentially activity based, and Serre Chevalier Vallée offers far more than can be packed into a typical week or fortnight vacation.
Winter.
For skiers and snowboarders the 250 kilometres of pistes on the north facing slopes are one of the largest ski areas in France, while extensive and relatively safe off-piste skiing abounds. Snow parks and crèches cater for the very young. Experienced skiers can savour the off-piste descent from 3505 metres at nearby Le Grave.
There is a cross-country ski route passing through Monetier and designated paths for those trying out the newly popular activity of trekking on snowshoes. Ski excursionists will find ample opportunities to escape from the pistes.
Other activities include ice skating, horse riding, go-karting on ice and paragliding.
Summer.
From strolling in the valley under the larch trees alongside the Guisane to trekking on the glacier of the Barre des Ecrins, the region offers something to walkers of all tastes and capabilities. Mountaineers will revel in the challenges of via ferrata, rock faces and mountain ascents.
Cyclists can try the mythical Tour de France climbs of the Col d'Isoard and the Col de Galibier. Mountain bikers can use the ski lifts going up and descend either on prepared routes or the extensive mountain tracks.
There is also rafting or kayaking on the Guisane, tennis, paragliding, canyoning, fishing, horse-riding, swimming, go-karting, plus adventure parks.
