Home description

Our house, situated at the entrance to the small village of Serralongue, is the perfect place for a peaceful and relaxing holiday. Whether you are on the balcony or in the side garden, you can enjoy fabulous views of Mount Canigou whilst sipping a glass of the local wine! Or if you are feeling active, local walks are literally on the doorstep - as is horseriding and tennis - with an international standard golf course 30 minutes drive away.

Within a few minutes walk from the house, you will find a bar/restaurant which is open every day and where you can buy bread and the local papers. There is also an artisan charcuterie/general store and a post office. About 15 minutes drive away, you will find Prats de Mollo, (a lovely walled town with shops, restaurants, supermarkets, hotels etc.), and, in the opposite direction, St Laurent de Cerdans, with its mill/factory, making and selling the local Catalan cloth. Both have public swimming pools which are open during July and August.

Our three bedroom house, with its family bathroom and 2 shower rooms, is ideal for families and couples who enjoy the countryside or are in need of an "away from it all" holiday.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

The Pyrenees-Orientales is the most southerly department of France and forms part of the region of Languedoc-Roussillon. As well as the beautiful Pyrenees, which run along its borders with Spain and Andorra, it also has the Mediterranean Sea. Thus, the PO contains beautiful scenery, including the snow-capped mountains, secluded valleys, lakes, sandy beaches, rocky coves and abundant wildlife.

It has an extensive history, only becoming part of France in 1659, and shares much of that history with northern Spain. It is referred to as north Catalunya, allied as much to Barcelona as to Paris, an area where people remain proud of their traditions, still speaking Catalan, the official language of both the tiny independent state of Andorra and northern Spain, and dancing the traditional sardana.

The main town of the PO is Perpignan, with its pavement cafes, markets and medieval centre. Within an easy drive are the Cathar Castles, as well as the museum to the 450,000 years old Tautavel Man. The Little Yellow Train climbs up into the mountains through breathtaking scenery and, on the coast, is Collioure which became a haven for artists (including Picasso) in the early 20th century.

In addition to its wealth of history, ski resorts and endless sandy beaches, the PO also boasts 300 days of sunshine a year (according to meteorological sources)!!

Serralongue area

Serralongue ("the long mountain") is in the Haut-Vallespir (the high valley of the river Tech). It is situated to the south of Canigou, the legendary Catalan mountain which reaches 2700 metres and dominates the region.

The village has one main street with an 11th century church, the only Conjurador (where the priest and villagers prayed to the saints) still existing in Catalunya and a museum covering at least some of its 3000 year history. It also has a restaurant/bar where you can buy bread, papers, etc, as well as eat, and an "artisan" charcuterie. It also has its own tennis court.

As well as tranquillity, you will also find plenty of walking, horseriding, a superb golf course - the Domaine de Falgos - and all manner of outdoor activities on your doorstep. The mediterranean beaches are about 90 minutes away and public outdoor swimming pools are open in July and August at both St Laurent de Cerdans and Prats de Mollo.

How to get there

The nearest airport to Serralongue is Perpignan, 65 kilometres away, while Gerona, about 120 kilometres away in Spain, is very convenient with its multitude of Ryanair flights as well as excellent road access and good car hire facilities.

Other airports such as Carcassonne, Montpellier, Nimes, Barcelona and Toulouse are all within easy driving distance to Serralongue.

In our experience, the best car hire deals are through specialist "broker" companies that can offer better rates than the actual hire companies. You can get quotes and book over the Internet or by telephone, but you must book several days in advance. It's worth checking ALL the company web-sites listed below, because they vary greatly; by country, time of year, pick-up, etc. It is not safe to rely upon a company simply because you have used it before! Over the years, good companies we have personal experience of are:-

NovaCar (www.rentacar-europe.com); World Wide Reservations (www.wwideres.co.uk); Auto Europe (www.auto-europe.co.uk); Holiday Autos (www.holidayautos.co.uk) and Travel Supermarket (www.travelsupermarket.com).

Don't forget that we are very close to Spain, and you will certainly want to cross the border to make the most of your holiday in this area. Whether you hire in France or Spain, PLEASE CHECK THAT YOUR INSURANCE COVERS YOU FOR BOTH FRANCE AND SPAIN AS SOME COMPANIES DO NOT INCLUDE BOTH COUNTRIES AS STANDARD!!!
