The Marche region
The Marche sum up the whole of Italy in themselves. That's why a recent campaign said "The Marche: Italy in one region". Sea, mountains, history, art, local traditions, spirituality, nature, typical food and wine: in the Marche you can find all the best features of Italian culture and way of life. "The Marche is a distillation of Italy"
The Marche offers 180 kilometres of coastline, 26 seaside resorts facing the Adriatic Sea defined by beautiful beaches, picturesque bays, 9 marinas and 16 Blue Flag beaches, that certify the water quality and further services.
500 squares, more than 1,000 important monuments, approximately one hundred cities of art, 37 fortresses, 106 castles, 15 strongholds.
In the Marche there are 12 protected areas: 2 national parks, 4 regional parks, 6 nature reserves, 15 state forests.
The food in the Marche region equally shares from the bounty of the sea as well as from the countryside ; the region can boast an incredible variety of dishes, strictly based on tradition and local produce. The use of fresh, top quality materials assembled with the minimum of fuss marks Marche's food. As with any rural diet, much use is made of food gathered from the wild; mushrooms, game, nuts and field herb. Waste, too, is frowned upon, and many of the now most fashionable dishes were first developed to use up such things as stale bread or parts of the pig. Some types of food is guaranteed through Quality Assurance and Product Certification, such as DOP ( Protected Designation of Origin) and IGP ( Protected Geographical Indication).
Serra San Quirico
The beautiful town of Arcevia is located between sea and mountains. Less than half an hour from Senigallia, but at the same time very close to the park of Gola della Rossa, the Frasassi Groves and the Umbria-Marche Apennine chain. The city is located about 500 meters above sea level and is located in a scenic area surrounded by rolling hills, crossed by vineyards and nestled in a charming natural area.
Arcevia is famous for its many castles spread across the various fractions, all dating back to the first centuries after Christ. The city also boasts numerous wine cellars and farms. Agriculture is a major activity in this area.
- Urbino is considered the Ideal City because it combines the culture of Humanism and the Renaissance. The “city in the form of a building” became the privileged place of the elegant and refined society of the 16th century, described in the wonderful pages of “Il Cortegiano” by Baldassarre Castiglione. Birth place of the peinter Raphael.
- Pesaro, with nearly one hundred thousand inhabitants, is the second largest city population in the region after the capital city, Ancona: with its old town that still shows the splendor of the seigneury of the Della Robere family and its precious museums, the city was the birthplace of Gioachino Rossini. The annual Rossini opera Festival is devoted to him and his work is protected by the Rossini Foundation. The city hosts the International Festival of the New Cinema
-Besides the capital cities of the province, The Marche boasts a number of art cities spread all over the region. In Gradara, the fortress and the ancient village are the best preserved Medieval structures in Italy.
The city walls which protect the fortress, make it one of the most impressive.
The castle was home to Lucrezia Borgia and Francesca di Rimini, who was the protagonist, together with Paolo, of one of the most famous love stories narrated by Dante in his Divine Comedy.
Fano, governed by the Malatesta family and deeply afflicted in Roman times, known for its Arch of Augustus, is now home to the Centro Studi Vitruviani; Urbania and the upper valley of the Metauro river feature many ducal monuments and their majolica.
The environmental setting around the nearby cities of S. Angelo in Vado and Mercatello sul Metauro si very evocative
The city of Ancona is located on the coast of central Adriatic on a promontory formed by the northern slopes of Monte Conero. The port of Ancona is one the most important ports on the Adriatic Sea: it's a fishing, tourist, commercial and industrial port. The oldest part of town straddles Colle Guasco, the hill above the port. On its peak, stands Ancona's finest and most remarkable church, the Medieval Cathedral of San Ciriaco. There are different beaches near Ancona: Passetto is the “urban beach”, featuring white-grey color rocks and the so-called “grotte” (caves), that were carved by fishermen to provide shelters for their small-sized fishing boats. To the north of Ancona the sandy beach of Palombina is more suitable for both children and families. Just south of Ancona rises the solitary limestone peak of Monte Conero whose steep slopes slide down to the sea; the bay of Portonovo, protected by the Regional Park of Monte Conero, is one of the prettiest white pebbled beach on the whole of the Northern Adriatic shore. On the bay, often crowded, there are few restaurants with a breathtaking view balcony serving fish dishes. “Della Vela” beach is a spectacular beach with a rock, shaped like a sail. It's a free public beach, at the very end of the south versant of the bay. The beach of Mezzavalle adds a touch of wilderness and scenery to the beauties of the bay. Once in Ancona you can't miss the two most typical and famous dishes : the Ancona stockfish (stoccafisso all'anconetana) and the “brodetto” (fish stew). A glass of Rosso Conero ( local red wine) is recommended.
