The Northern Mountains region
Parque Nacional da Peneda Gerês The magnificent Parque is known simply as Caldas do Gerês ( or Gerês ) the main centre of the park attracts more tourists than anywhere else in the Minho. Its split into three distinct parts, the central area based around the spa town Caldas do Gerês, the wilder northern section around the Serra da Peneda and the far eastern section of Serra da Gerês Both Serras remain largelty undiscovered, especially in the eastern section where the spectacular mountain terrain feels large impenetrable. (Walking maps are available at the Tourist office). Montalegre West of Chaves Montalegre looms up suddenly, commanding its surrounding plains, this frontier town with a history rooted in past centuries and its medieval fourteenth century castle. Nowadays it has a fair amount of modern development caused by the nearby Pisões dam. You might ask at the local bars about vinhos da morte ( wines of the dead ) so called because of the practice of maturing the wine in bottles buried underground at the nearby villages of Serra do Barroso. The Serra do Barrosos is famed for its smoked meats, (fumeiro) and ham ( presunto ).
Serra Peneda de Geres / Cabril area
The village of Cabril is 10 minutes walking distance from the farmhouse. In the village you will come across many friendly local folk, there is a couple of restaurant cafés, the little church up on the hill and a mini market. You can also wander down to the Cabril Reservoir and swim from one of the many man made beaches in the crystal clear water, or if you prefer walk up the majestic mountains, there are mant trails to follow and you will see all sorts of wild animal, mountain goats, wild ponies, cattles with their enormous horns and large bells, if you are lucky you'll spot wolves, wild hogs and plenty of different types of bird and wild fauna. In the North, there are many places of interest to visit. Oporto, famous for its Port & wines, take a boat down the Douro valley. Braga known as the Religious Capital of Portugal, visit the famous cathedral of Bom Jesus with its monumental staircase. Guimarães the birthplace of Afonso Henriques. Montalegre, Chaves & Gerêz, any of these places would make interesting exploration of this little known corner of the Minho. Places of Interest : Porto, Braga, Guimarães, Chaves,Montalegre to name but a few. As the local saying goes: “Coimbra studies; Braga prays; Lisbon show off; and Porto works.” Cabril relaxes....

Looking forward to our return in the summer of 2008 - Thankyou! James family 07 Stayed only a few days but what a truly magical place, learnt Portuguese, and spend many a barmy evening drinking wine and eating "petiscos" with the locals, the sound of distant cowbells I will remember for a long time to come, I recommend to all for that truly relaxing holiday in a time that stood still. - Geoff Davies
