The cottage can be split in half; giving a 4 or 5/6 combination. You only pay for the amount you use. This makes it very cost effective and does not eat up too much of your budget. We never let to two different parties at the same time - so pool and grounds are exclusive.
The property is composed of two ajoining cottages and both have been furnished to a very high standard. There is satellite TV in both with 50 English channels, a luxury fully-fitted kitchen in each, a dining veranda, and the farmhouse laundry is also available for use.
A cot is available and there are some games for children.
There is a weekly maid service to change the linen and towels.

This place is a real Garden of Eden, run by a wonderful couple, Francis and Hanne. Four of us stayed at Quinta dos Sobreiros for two weeks. Each couple had its own cottage, which join together semi-detached style although cooking and meals were at the larger cottage... it was more convenient even though both cottages have fully equipped kitchens. The standard of furnishings, fittings and cleanliness were excellent with Francis and Hanne always on hand to help in any way. The views from their garden and terrace will linger in our memory for years to come, with the whole estate nicely tucked away on the edge of a wooded hill side. The pool is a must on hot days but it's not of Olympic dimensions so be aware if you are a swimming –ista! Depth is up to chin level (I'm five foot eleven) with steps leading in. The pool area is totally fenced in so no danger for toddlers. There is a fully covered optional area for dinning al fresco, some ten yards from the main cottage, with a fully equipped BBQ. It proved a favourite haunt at all times of the day. Each cottage has its own bathroom with constant hot water (provided by solar heating) and there are gas central heating radiators in case you visit during cooler periods. Quinta dos Sobreiros can be tricky to find – a sat nav is a must and make sure you feed in the correct co-ordinates since trying to feed in street names and place names is a total non-starter ( we ended up in back streets of Porto some 10km from the airport!!). The exact coordinates are West 8.28753 North 40.21811, which are helpfully provided by Francis in his pre-trip e-mail. But some sat navs (like the one on our car hire) only take coordinates as “degrees, minutes”….which involved some hasty calculation in our car to get West 8 deg 17.2518' and North 40 deg 13.0866' . With our faith in our sat nav somewhat shaken we finally managed to find Quinta dos Sobreiros after a few phone calls to Francis. Portugal is a wonderful country but road markings are almost non-existent in the remote rural parts and it's rarely clear who has right of way…if in doubt, concede to the local drivers who always assume it's their right to drive fast and recklessly! Local facilities are limited: there is an InterMarche supermarket at the nearby town of Vila Nova de Poiares, which is a pretty place some five minutes drive away with all the necessary things such as post office, pharmacy, banks, petrol stations and restaurants. We did not try any of the restaurants locally (although many are listed in the excellent folders Francis and Hanne have compiled in each cottage). One of the snags we found was that to go out for an evening meal would involve having to drive back after dark (with at least one sober person behind the wheel)…not an experience for the faint-hearted. However, this did not spoil our stay in any way: there is some much to see and experience within a 60 mile radius that on our days out we would lunch out. The food in virtually every restaurant we tried was locally sourced, beautifully cooked, and attractively prepared with very generous portions and invariably at most reasonable prices…it made lunch into a relaxing and pleasant experience! Practical points: Quinta dos Sobreiros is some 1000 feet above sea level so the evenings can get chilly. This does not stop the local mosquitoes from doing their best to find your tender parts for their supper, so the usual insect repellent creams, sprays etc are a must once the sun begins to set. Otherwise, Francis and Hanne have done their best to provide everything (towels, pool towels, hair drier, wi-fi, etc.) you could possibly need for a relaxing and care-free holiday. We fell in love with the place and will go back at the nearest opportunity. |

We loved this cottage so much - what made it extra-special was that Hanne & Francis ensured we had everything we needed, even supplying a late-night arrival pack of rations to get us started (we didn't get to the cottage until 10.30pm after flight and rental car delays). Their attention to our every need was just the perfect balance of helpfulness and advice - on everything from where to go for shopping, where to eat out and how to get a taxi!! Hanne even drove to the local town on our first morning (whilst we followed) to show us the way. In the cottage, there is a file full of maps, local brochures and information on points of interest in the area, covering everything from go-karting, river-paddling and horse-riding. For the less adventurous there are gentle forest walks, historic sites and of course excellent shopping in Comibra. There is an Intermarche in the local village, which stocks most things you need, and a Lidl in another nearby village. The local market is a must - buy produce grown in the area - fruit, vegetables & more - and support the co-ops and farmers. The cottage has been restored sympathetically, keeping original stone & woodwork where possible, but making it very comfortable and well-appointed. The kitchen is well-equipped, and the covered BBQ area is bliss - needless to say we spent a few evenings eating al fresco. Since we were just 4 people, we only needed the 2 bedroom cottage, but there is a wonderful 1 bedroom annexe available if required. Francis & Hanne never let the cottage and annexe to different parties at the same time to ensure privacy. The pool is beautiful, not overly-chlorinated but fresh, clean and well-maintained. It is just lovely to sit and enjoy the views, dipping your toes in the water. In the garden there are lemons, oranges, plums, peaches, mint and chives and a wonderful pond complete with frogs and fish. The frog chorus is amazing to hear - they make quite some noise!!! Overall we were delighted with the cottage, location and facilities. However, we have never been made to feel so welcome or at home as by Francis and Hanne. Their warmth and hospitality were outstanding, and many's a story and glass of wine was shared late into the evening. Truly memorable. |
