About the home

Casa Branca is a traditional Portuguese country dwelling that has recently been renovated while retaining much of its 1800's original charm.

It is ideally suited for families taking a vacation or couples taking a relaxing well-earned break to unwind.
Swim or just lounge by the pool and have your meals “al fresco” on the terrace accompanied with your choice of the many excellent Portuguese wines, beers and fruit juices.

A welcome pack is supplied on arrival inclusive of a bottle of wine.
The garden is for use by the guests but the owner has access for pool and garden maintenance.

Guests have the sole use of the pool while in attendance. It has a uniform depth of 1.5 metres and suitable for children who can swim. Supervision of all children in and around the swimming pool is the total responsibility of the parents.

Glasses, bottles or any breakables are not to be taken into or in the close vicinity of the pool.
Use of the pool by all guests is at their own risk.

Minimum of 3 day bookings.

Languages spoken: English and Polish.

The Northern Mountains region

The surrounding countryside here in the Beiras region of Central Portugal is mountainous with rivers, said to be the cleanest in Europe where picnics and swimming from the numerous near by river beaches is very popular.
From the property you can see the Serra da Lousã mountain range. A drive through the mountains is worth a visit for the spectacular views and to visit the villages, some of which are seen clinging to the steep hillsides.

The winter weather is temperate. The peak summer temperature can exceed 36deg C. though some evenings one may require a light jumper.

The Serra da Estrela area

Vila Nova de Poiares is a typical rural market town about 3 Km away from the cottage, with numerous shops, 2 supermarkets, banks and post office, the local market is held each Monday morning. Local activities include canoeing on Mondego River, fishing (licence costs €7), swimming, go-karting, cycling, walking and tenpin bowling.

Many of the surrounding towns and villages hold festas, particularly throughout the summer, with traditional songs, food and dancing.

Vila Nova de Poiares is well serviced by excellent roads and motorways giving access to many places of interest, notably the magnificent Buccaco Palace Hotel, once the property of the Portuguese Royal family, where you can stroll in the gardens and explore the woodland pathways. Swim at the river beaches at Gois and Varzea Perquena villages. Visit the Moorish fort at Lousa and the various medieval castles throughout the area.

Well worth a visit is the beautiful university city of Coimbra, once the capital of Portugal, and wander through the maze of little streets and sample Portuguese delicacies in the numerous cafes. Take the Tuk Tuk ride to get a panoramic view up the old cobbled streets to the university or a boat ride on the lovely Mondego River.

Above all you will have the opportunity in Central Portugal to experience true Portuguese hospitality.

Fly BA - Easy Jet to Lisbon or Easy Jet and Ryan Air to Porto.

From Porto the drive takes about an hour and a half, Lisbon around two hours. alternatively relax on the excellent Intercity or the Alpha train from either city to Coimbra (approx €20 pp) and collect your pre-booked hire car and take the N17 road to Vila Nova de Poiares then about 3 KM to Pereiro de Alem village.

We will send directions to help find us prior to you leaving home but if unsure of directions to Pereiro de Alem village call from Vila Nova Poiares town and we will meet up with you.

“Heaven in the Country” Lovely property with your own pool.So relaxing.Plenty to see a short drive away, if you can drag yourself off your sun bed. ! “Fantastic, a house and location like something out of a dream.” My wife and I stayed here for a week in the summer of 2011. We had a fantastic time, the surrounding mountains and scenery is stunning and so peaceful. We were looking for a relaxing, peaceful time and that's exactly what we got. Having your own pool right outside the front door is even better than I imagined and Bruce and Bella's hospitality was second to none. On the odd occasion when we got lost nearby or were looking for somewhere nice to eat we were able to give them a call and they were always happy to help. I could not recommend this place more, it's also a very short, easy drive from Porto which has an airport into which we can fly directly with Ryanair from Ireland. We will definitely be back. “Everything you could want!” Delightful cottage with a crystal clear pool a few steps away from the front door for those refreshing early morning dips or to cool down at the end of a long day's touring around this most stunning part of Central Portugal. Set in very peaceful village but just a short drive away from good restaurants, river beaches, historical places of interest for all ages and nightlife in the nearby City of Coimbra. Bella and Bruce were very welcoming and made us feel at home immediately, and on hand to give us advice when required. The secure car parking was a bonus too! “Relaxing Heaven!” We had the most fantastic week at Casa Branca. It is a lovely no-nonsense property that served our needs as a family of four perfectly. The supermarket is very close by and the set out of the property made everything so easy - we had barbecues every night. The pool is as alluring as the photos indicate. . The surrounding area is really lovely and the temperature in August was perfect - warm but never unpleasant. Having breakfast in the sun every morning was a particular pleasure - I wish I was there now! Response: Thank you for your lovely review. “Compact but very comfortable cottage in a beautiful area of Portugal” Bruce and Bella (villa owners and next-door neighbours) were very helpful and welcoming but unobtrusive. The cottage was spotless and had everything we needed for a family of four. There are so many interesting and beautiful places to visit in this area of Portugal - it makes a great base and nice to be able to have a dip in the pool to cool off after a day's sight-seeing.
