Although situated in the centre of Sermide, Villa Castellani offers a very quiet and restful stay thanks to its beautiful park surroundings.

Sermide is located on the extreme eastern edge of Mantova’s province on the banks of the Po river, Italy’s longest; and converges with three beautiful, Italian regions: Lombardia, Veneto and Emilia.

Villa Castellani was originally built in the eighteenth century and was restructured and enlarged at the end of the nineteenth century. Thanks to a further recent restoration and to a tasteful interior decoration, Villa Castellani has re-gained its charm of one hundred years ago. An entrance hall, two living-rooms, a dining-room, a kitchen and five bedrooms are at guests’ disposal. Additionally, guests can enjoy the Villa’s magnificent 2-acres of park, which boasts a variety of ancient botanic species and trees, along with a swimming-pool.

The Lombardy / Mantova region

Lombardy is a region full of rich history and beautiful landscapes, artistic cities and natural splendours. Situated in Northern Italy, the Lombardy region stretches from the Alps to the lakes of Iseo, Como, Maggiore and Garda.

Mantova (or Mantua in English), situated amongst three artificial lakes, boasts a rich cultural history. The city itself comprises of cobbled piazzas and narrow, medieval streets, numerous Palazzos, a theatre, duomo and a Basilica. The surrounding areas are perfect for outdoor pursuits including cycling, walking, and skiing.

Sermide area

Sermide is strategically located close to some of Italy’s most influential, artistic cities. In fact, in one hour car-drive you can easily reach: Mantova, Verona, Vicenza, Padova, Ferrara, Bologna, Modena, Este, Montagnana, and Monselice. In a 90-minutes drive, you can also visit Venezia, Parma and Ravenna, as well as the Lago di Garda and the Delta del Po.

Along with its proximity to these interesting cities, Sermide’s placement allows our guests to taste gastronomic specialties of three different Italian regions - Lombardia, Veneto and Emilia. Each have different characteristics but are equally enjoyable. A list of recommended restaurants is available in the villa.

Eight bicycles are available for our guests to enjoy fun trips on the Po’s banks. Eastwards you can reach Stellata and cross the bridge on the Po’ river at Ficarolo to get back to Sermide on the northern side via Castelmassa (35 Km). A similar trip, this time westwards, can be undertaken by crossing the bridge on the Po’ river at Revere. In both cases, from the banks of the river you can admire delightful villages, antique little churches, and Stellata’s fortress “Rocca Possente”.

All along the Po’s banks, there are natural reserves that are perfect for walking. The vegetation is rich in poplars and willow-trees and numerous birds can easily be spotted. There are three nature reserves nearby: ‘Isola Boschina’ at Ostiglia, ‘Isola Boscone’ at Carbonara Po and ‘del Gruccione’ at Sermide.

A golf course is around 90 minutes away by car.

How to get there

By air : the closest airports are those of Verona and Bologna, both one hour drive from Sermide with connecting flights to Europe’s major airports.

Ryanair (www.ryanair.com), a budget airline, operate a route from Birmingham and London Stansted to Bologna Airport.

Venezia’s Marco Polo airport is a two hours drive away, Milano’s Malpensa airport three hours and a half (in both cases we do not recommend them because of possible traffic jams).

By car:

- from East and South (Venezia, Bologna) highway A13 Bologna-Padova, take exit Occhiobello, then follow directions to Castelmassa, Sermide (30 km from tallgate).

- from West and North (Milano, Verona) highway A4, take exit Verona Sud, then follow directions to Legnago/Rovigo - superstrada ss 434- once you reach km n°41, take exit Vangadizza, then follow directions to Castelmassa, Sermide.

By train: nearest train station is Sermide which is connected with Mantova train station

The 2-acre garden is characterized by ancient and precious trees: the large plane-tree at the entrance shows a plate indicating the year 1802!

The swimming-pool (9 x 4 metres) is surrounded by a nice orchard. In the same area you will find a little cottage with a dressing-room and a toilette, as well as an external shower - perfect for those lazy days by the pool.
