Spectacular villa right on the beach in North Bali.

Puri Segara - simply meaning "house by the sea" in Balinese - is a villa on Bali's north coast, not far from Lovina some 110km/65miles north of Denpasar airport. Lovina is a small town providing a relaxing environment but with sufficient facilities - such as small restaurants, beaches, cyber cafes, cottage hotels and local sightseeing. It is also located some 30 minutes from the old capital of Singaraja, which has supermarkets and banks etc.

Unlike the touristy south of Bali - that has modern 5-star hotels and popular, vibrant night spots - the north coast completely contrasts with peace, quiet and tranquility: an experience that brings you closer to the exquisite culture of the amicable Balinese people.

After spending a couple of decades travelling most parts of the world, we found ourselves returning by choice to Bali again and again. Eventually, we decided to build a villa on Bali's north coast as it meets our needs of solitude and serenity, supported by Balinese manners and hospitality. Equally, we needed good infrastructure and communications - such as frequent international flights and the Internet - but moreover we desired an excellent climate and a beach location!

We are attracted by Balinese culture and simplicity, both in architectural design and style of living. Our villa is buka style (meaning open) with a traditional, high thatched roof and free to enjoy the moderate climate. It can accommodate 8 guests in four double bedrooms, three with air conditioning and en-suite bathrooms, whilst the fourth enjoys an impressive open vista of the sea from its mosquito-netted four-poster bed, high in the buka's eaves. Two bathrooms are Balinese-style, which are mainly outdoors allowing one to absorb Nature's beauty whilst also preserving privacy.

The villa's floor area is some 460 sq m (5000 sq ft), and occupies about one quarter of the tropical garden area. A large open plan lounge and terrace has commanding views over the Bali Sea. A large "infinity" swimming pool, measuring 18m x 6m (60ft x 20ft) is both suitable for young families as well as the more serious bather.

Outside living is enhanced by two large bale benongs - simple but comprehensive thatched sunshades furnished with soft mattresses and cushions as well as lighting and power points, perhaps for the laptop addict! The bale benongs provide remarkably relaxing view points to either socialise with friends or to escape into tranquil peace. Meanwhile, five water features combine to subtly relax and soothe the soul. Internet is provided.

Daytime staff include a housekeeper/cook and a gardener, 6 days a week, whilst night time security is provided 7-days a week. Our housekeeper is happy to cook and shop for you during her working hours of 9am - 6pm.

Our villa, called Puri Segara, is magnificently situated on a quiet stretch of beach in Tangguwisia. The villa is surrounded by vineyards and rice fields with a unique view of the mountains of the North. The villa is about 15 minutes drive from Lovina and 5 minutes from Seririt.

Here in the North there are still many traditional plantations, waterfalls, temples and villages that perform various trades. Walks in the vicinity of the villa along the beach and beside the fields and temples gives many opportunities for the avid photographer and allows you a window on the life of the still traditional ways of this unspoiled area of Bali. You will often see personal ceremonies being conducted on the beach and at the local temple as well as larger village ceremonies.

There are many activities to keep you amused during your stay. Early in the morning, jump on a local boat from our beach to visit the dolphins (sometimes you can see them from the villa). Visit waterfalls, hot springs, and temples. Golf is 45 minutes away as is the botanical garden. Come horse riding with me in the hills above Lovina. Tennis is 20 minutes away. The best diving and snorkelling is at Mejengan Island which can be organised with a local dive centre. You can play badminton and croquet in the garden. Lovina is the place for the best restaurants in North Bali. You can hire a car with a driver for about 500,000 Indonesian Rupiah per day. Alternatively you could rent a small motorbike although driving in Bali can be risky at times!

I will provide you with all the help you need to make your stay as peaceful or as active as you would like :)

The Bali/Lesser Sunda Islands region

Puri Segara is situated about 15 minutes drive west of Lovina, the tourist center of the north. Beautiful beaches, sawas (rice-fields), plantations, mountains, temples and some nice villages and towns are close by.

More and more people are discovering this still pristine, unspoiled and authentic area of North Bali. The surroundings provide ample scope for exploring, discovery and activities.

Seririt

Lovina

Lovina, a section of coastline several kilometers west of Singaraja, has been lightly developed with the tourist in mind. Lovina is made up of the villages of Kaliasem, Kalibukbuk, Banyualit, Anturan, Tukad Munga and Pemaron. The center is Kalibukbuk with restaurants, cafes, small shops, a market, a supermarket and even a bakery. In the center of Lovina you can find an ATM (bank). The town offers a wide choice of good restaurants serving delicious national and international cuisine. The prices are 50 to 70% lower than in Europe!

Lovina has a number of Western-oriented physicians with a good reputation.

Seririt

A five minute drive from the villa takes you to Seririt, where you can buy your groceries at the local morning market. In Seririt you will also find a supermarket, drug store, Clinic, doctors and the local police station. Seririt still is a very traditional, unspoiled place so you will hardly encounter any tourists.

Singaraja

Singaraja was once the capital of Bali and is still the largest city in North Bali. Still, you can explore different districts where Dutch settlers used to live and work. In Singaraja at the large supermarket Hardy's you will find all you need for your major shopping although Hardy's in Seririt will satisfy most of your daily shopping needs. The city is about 25 minutes drive from Puri Segara and is still the centre for the north's festivals and ceremonies

Singaraja is home to the Gedong Kirtya library. Here you will find the famous Lontar Manuscripts and lots of Balinese literature and books on the colonial period. In the port of Singaraja you can still find old warehouses from the days of Dutch colonization. There is also an authentic Chinese temple, a number of department stores, hospitals, pharmacies, banks and a large market.

Buddhist Monastery

In the hills of Banjar, about 15 minutes away, is a Buddhist monastery, Brahma Vihara Arama. This is the only Buddhist monastery in Bali. The monastery is spread over several layers and has special walls and rooms for prayer. It is also known as the small Borobodur. The monastery is inhabited by some Balinese Buddhist monks. From the hill on which the monastery is located, you have a beautiful view of the area and the sea. A visit to the monastery is easy to combine with the hot springs of Air Panas.

Hot water springs

Near the monastery, you will find the famous hot springs of Air Panas. These "hot springs" are located in the hills of the village of Banjar and are surrounded by beautiful scenery. The 38°C hot sulphurous source ends at eight carved dragonheads. The sulphurous water has a healing effect on skin diseases. Massage under the water spouts is wonderful, remember to bring your swimming costume.

Waterfalls

Approximately 20 minutes south of Singaraja is Bali's most well know waterfall - the Git Git waterfall. A path of about 1 km with a variety of souvenir shops leads you past a coffee and a vanilla plantation to the 60-metre-high waterfall. Once you have arrived at the waterfall, you can enjoy the sights sounds and wind of the water splashing water downwards. Closer waterfalls are Sing Sing (10 minutes drive) and Aling Aling (30 minutes drive). Sekumpul Waterfall is just east of Singaraja but is a longer walk of 2 hours. Remember to take your camera and swimming costume.

Dolphins

This area is famous for its dolphins which can be admired every morning out in the open sea before sunrise. A local fishermen can pick you up right on the beach in front of the villa to go in search of dolphins. The large shrimp population along the coast attracts many dolphins to this area and the chance of actually seeing dolphins is 80%. The boat can be surrounded by dozens of dolphins jumping and playing. You will be picked up at 6am. The trip typically lasts for two hours.

Apart from visiting waterfalls, hot springs and temples. Golf is 45 minutes away at Bedegul as is the Botanical Garden and the famous Water Temple. Tennis is 25 minutes away. The best diving and snorkelling is at Menjangen Island which can be organised with a local dive centre. Mountain biking and trekking can also be easily arranged.

These are only some of the attractions very close to the villa Puri Segara. There are many more places for sightseeing in Bali.
