The Aegean Islands region
The landscape is dry during summer and the bright blue colours of the sea change to the turquoise during daylight,to redish yellow and dark blue at sunset. The sunlight is very strong and sheds its warm rays to the rocky surfaces and sandy beaches in different angles during the day thus providing a variety of colours.Sunsets are exceptional for all the Cyclades islands and Serifos naturally deserves a great merit of it.
In spring and autumn the light looses part of its brightness but on the other hand the land is covered by a green coat of grass, wild bushes and flowers. It is a place ideal for hiking trough the different paths once used by the local workers of the famous iron mines of Serifos.
At the west coast of Serifos there is a small port ( Mega Livadi ),where you can visit the now deserted iron mine shafts, the port facilities for loading the raw iron material to ships and the ruins of the offices of the flourishing up to 1962 company of the austrian Groman, who following a lease agreement with the Greek State made this part of the island a substancial iron exporting port. There is also a small museum where semi precious stones of the subsoil of Serifos are exhibited. There are all around the island more than 15 exceptional beaches (sandy, pebbled, rocky) covering all swimmers'tastes. The round trip of the island will not take more than an hour by car.
