About this location

The Island of Malta region

Megaliths, medieval dungeons and Calypso's Cave – The Maltese Islands are positively mythic. The narrow meandering streets of their towns and villages are crowded with Renaissance cathedrals and Baroque palaces. As the countryside is dotted with the oldest known human structures in the world, the Islands have rightly been described as an open-air museum.

The Maltese archipelago lies virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean, with Malta 93km south of Sicily and 288km north of Africa. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino with a total population of 400,000 inhabitants over an area of 316sq km and a coastline of 196.8km (not including 56.01 km for the island of Gozo).

Malta is the largest island and the cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterised by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture while Comino is largely uninhabited.

With superbly sunny weather, expansive beaches, a thriving nightlife and 7,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do. With a little help from any guidebook, captivating places of interest are immediately identified – the world famous Hypogeum selected as a place of World Heritage by UNESCO, prehistoric temples and grand palaces are but a few.

The long relationship between the Islanders and the various nationalities that occupied Malta over the centuries has created a marriage of styles and traditions, giving the Islands a fascinating eclectic culture.

True to the melting pot of cultural influences, the national languages are English and Maltese.

Senglea is a fortified city in the east of Malta, mainly in the Grand Harbour area. It is one of the Three Cities, with the other two being Cospicua and Vittoriosa. The city of Senglea is also called Civitas Invicta, because it managed to resist the Ottoman invasion at the Great Siege of 1565. The proper name is Senglea since the grandmaster who built it Claude De La Sengle, gave this city a part of his name.

The island was in fact joined by a landbridge to Cospicua during the time of the Knights of St. John and as a result, it became peninsular in shape. During the time of the Knights of St. John, Senglea was also used as a hunting area, and was in fact known as L'Isola di San Giuliano, but later it was developed and made inhabitable by the Grand Master, Claude de la Sengle who built fortifications following a Turkish invasion in 1551. The locality eventually became known as Senglea but retained its old name Isla.

"Superb stay"

I did a lot of research before choosing this place for our vacation. I was instantly drawn in by the spectacular view of the harbor and of Valletta. Absolutely stunning. The balcony is perfect to sit in the morning with a cup of coffee taking in the view or in the evening watching the lights of the old city. We enjoyed the modern decor of the flat as well as the espresso machine. We experienced no issues with it like some other reviewers. The flat is located in a residential area away from the noise and crowds of tourists. Great restaurants and mini-marts all within walking distance. There is also a conveniently located bus stop near-by as well as water taxis . There are quite a bit of stairs getting from the street to the building. They are not necessarily steep but they are plentiful. I would absolutely recommend staying here for your trip to Malta. The price is worth it for the lovely view and amenities. Booking, and checking in were a breeze. We were even met with a complementary food package which was perfect after a long flight. The only thing you will regret is not being able to stay here longer, I know we did.

"Abolutely Perfect!"

The view from the apartment is absolutely stunning. The location is great and you feel part of traditional maltese life staying in Senglea. We never experienced any problems with parking, check in was good and the apartment was gorgeous inside. We have rented many properties before but this is definitely one of our favourites! The fireworks were spectacular!
